The Hundred player retention list announced; Australia stars dominate overseas list

The Hundred has released the retention list of both men’s and women’s for the 2024 edition of the tournament. A total of 137 players have been retained which combines both men’s and women’s teams whereas 75 spots are yet to get filled. However, Australia have dominated the overseas retention list. Out of the 16 overseas players, nine players belong to Australia.

According to the tournament rules, men’s teams can keep up to ten players (excluding the nominated centrally contracted players), while women’s teams can keep up to eight. Several other international players will be available for selection at the March 20 draft. The complete list of draft-eligible players will be announced on March 4. The fourth season of The Hundred starts on July 23.

The men’s team of Manchester Originals and Oval Invincibles have gone up with the most retentions. Originals have England‘s white-ball captain Jos Buttler whereas Invincibles has the likes of big names such as English all-rounder Sam Curran and Australian leg spinner Adam Zampa. Zak Crawley’s geam London Spirit have made the least retentions with just 8.

Among the women’s teams, the London Spirit, Manchester Originals, Northern Superchargers, Oval Invincibles, and Southern Brave have met their retention quotas, while Birmingham Phoenix have kept seven players, including overseas players Ellyse Perry and Sophie Devine. ‘The Hundred’ is an eight-team competetionn in England. In the Hundred, each over contains five legal balls, and a maximum of 100 balls can be bowled every innings. The tournament was under the headlines at the start of this month. The reason behind the same was Indian businessman Lalit Modi, who was the mastermind behind the Indian Premier League.Lalit Modi wanted to buy ‘The Hundred’ and wanted to introduce private players in the tournament, however, England and Wales didn’t agree to it as they didn’t want to damage there relationship with the BCCI. The ECB also feared that they would lose there control from the tournament.

Oval Invincibles are the current champions of the Men’s ‘The Hundred’ whereas Southern Brave have won the Women’s ‘The Hundred’.
