I think they won the game in the powerplay - Sanju Samson
Rajasthan Royals were asked to bat first by Rajat Patidar and they finished their 20 overs with a score of 173/4 on the board. Yashasvi Jaiswal top scored with 75 off 47 balls while Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel contributed with decent 30s.
Defending the score, Rajasthan Royals bowlers received no support from fielders as a lot of catches were dropped and RCB completed the run-chase in 17.3 overs.
Speaking after the match, Sanju Samson said that the Royal Challengers Bengaluru took the game away from them in the powerplay itself. He said:
"Absolutely (asked if they felt 170 was a handy score). I think after losing the toss on that kind of a slowish wicket, batting first under the sun for the first 10 overs is tough in day games. We knew they would come hard at us and I think they won the game in the powerplay."
Catches win matches - Sanju Samson
Sanju Samson further expressed disappointment over the poor fielding performance of his team but highlighted how RCB fielders also dropped their catches. He said:
"Catches win matches. They also dropped our catches and we also dropped their catches (smiles)."
Sanju Samson also said that they need to improve and bounce back strong in the coming matches. He said:
"No doubt we have to improve. Credit to RCB. Ball did come on better in the second innings. They were really good. We have been having some really good chats about improving and coming back strong. We have to leave the thoughts behind and come back positive for the next game."
How did RR perform in the previous IPL match against RCB?
Rajasthan Royals handed the Royal Challengers Bengaluru a four-wicket defeat in their previous IPL clash and marched into Qualifier 2 of IPL 2024.
Electing to bowl first in the match, Trent Boult bowled an economical opening spell before Ravichandran Ashwin controlled the middle overs brilliantly with his figures of 2/19 in his four overs.
Pacer Avesh Khan emerged as the top wicket-taker and picked up three wickets, while Sandeep Sharma and Yuzvendra Chahal also contributed as RCB were restricted to 172/8 in their 20 overs.
In the chase, RR batters showed positive intent. Yashasvi Jaiswal provided a good start with 45 off 30, while Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer played impactful knocks of 36 and 26 runs.
Despite some hiccups in the middle overs, Rovman Powell helped Rajasthan Royals cross the finish line with his unbeaten 16 off 8 in the 19th over. In that match, Ravichandran Ashwin was awarded the Player of the Match for his heroics with the ball.
