Former Pakistan captain Salman Butt has categorically denied the accusations leveled by the renowned journalist and film director Mubashir Luqman against the skipper Babar Azam after the national team’s early exit from the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

Luqman sparked controversy by leveling serious match-fixing allegations against Babar following Pakistan's disappointing exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024. The senior anchor has directly accused Babar of allegedly accepting lavish gifts in exchange for intentionally influencing match outcomes in the ongoing mega ICC event and other matches.

His allegations came to light after Pakistan's unexpected defeat to the USA and a narrow victory over Ireland in the Group A matches, resulting in their early elimination from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2024.

Luqman, in a recent video shared on social media, alleged that Babar had received an Audi E-Tron as a gift from his brother, purportedly linked to individuals involved in betting circles. Additionally, the senior Pakistani journalist also claimed that the Pakistan cricket team captain had acquired apartments in Australia and New Zealand under suspicious circumstances.

These accusations have stirred a heated debate among the cricket fraternity. The seriousness of the allegations has prompted wide-ranging reactions from fans and former cricketers. Now, reacting to Luqman’s accusations, Salman Butt is defending Babar and saying that all these claims are baseless.

Butt said that the right-handed batter is such a big sports personality that he could easily get such gifts, given his contribution to Pakistan cricket. During his recent appearance on a local TV channel, Butt addressed the match-fixing allegations surrounding Babar.

Butt defended the star batter, emphasizing his status as one of the world's premier batters. He said that Babar and his team already faced a lot of criticism for their poor performance in the T20 World Cup 2024, but these accusations are ridiculous.

However, Butt's remarks took a surprising turn when he said that it was common for a player like Babar to receive expensive gifts like Audi and property, comparing it to the batter casually discarding his sweat on the ground due to his substantial earnings. Butt argued that with Babar's wealth and status, receiving high-value gifts like luxury cars worth millions from showrooms would not be suspicious.

Salman Butt said on a local TV channel: “We are talking about a person, who is one of the best batters in the world. It's okay if he played badly, it's okay if our team played too bad cricket. We have already criticized those poor guys a lot.

But you mentioned materialistic, Audi, house, here and there. This is like when Babar Azam wipes off his sweat and throws it on the ground. He earns so much money which is top level. If he goes to a showroom, he will easily get a car worth 1-2 crores as a gift.”
