Joe Root, a star player for England, expressed his excitement about his country’s chance to defend its World Cup victory later this year in India. The former Test skipper believed that England’s prior experience playing on the sub-continent will benefit them during the prestigious 50-over competition, which will take place in October-November.

England easily defeated opponents to win the 2019 World Cup at home, but Root acknowledged that the challenge in India would be more difficult and that England’s prospects of successfully retaining their championship would rely on how effectively their batsmen could play spin.

We Understand Indians Conditions Well: Joe Root

“It’s (World Cup) a great opportunity, great chance, we have not experienced it before. To defend our world title is going be a great chance for us,” Root said, as quoted by PTI news agency.

“I think guys have spent a lot of time in India and understand those conditions well. It will depend on how we play spin consistently; how we can play in the limited number of 50-over games we have before the World Cup,” he added.

ILT20 Experience Can Help Me Grow: Joe Root

Root has a stellar overall record in ODIs, scoring 6207 runs total at an average of 50, including 16 hundreds. He hasn’t scored a century since the 2019 World Cup, though, and his average is around 30.

The lineup that is going to South Africa for a three-match ODI series does not include Root. The standout batter is a member of the first International League Twenty20 team, the Dubai Capitals (ILT20).

Root says he hopes to make the World Cup team. “Look, at the end of the year we have (the) World Cup in India. I can learn a lot about myself (in ILT20), put myself in different scenarios. I have had no experience (of limited-overs cricket) for a while. (I’ll) see if it (ILT20) can help me grow better as a player.”
