To Make India Win In The Test Cricket Is Actually My Goal– Venkatesh Iyer

Indian all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer has said that his main goal is to win the matches for India National Cricket Team in Test cricket.

After his success in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021, Iyer got his maiden T20I call-up for the home series against New Zealand last year and after his sensational performance in Vijay Hazare Trophy, he got his maiden One Day Internationals (ODI) call-up for the upcoming three-match series against South Africa.

Speaking on a chat show Backstage with Boria, Iyer said that his goal is not just to be in the team but to win the matches for the team.

“The objective is not just to get into any team. The objective is to be there and make the team win. Irrespective of the quantum of the performance, but contribute to the side’s victory. That’s what is in my mind and not just getting into any team,” said Venkatesh Iyer.

Iyer added that his “ultimate objective” is to play Test cricket for India and he feels that he can be an asset to the team in the longer format of the game.

“I’m not just looking at it from the T20 perspective or the ODI perspective, even in the longer format, I can be an asset to the team and I would like to definitely contribute to the side’s victory.”

“That is the ultimate objective. To make India win in the longer format is actually my goal” said Iyer when asked about his Test cricket ambitions.

The Madhya Pradesh all-rounder said that he doesn’t want to be a player who just gets into the Indian squad and do nothing. Venkatesh Iyer added that he wants to win games and tournaments for India.

“0.1 per cent (of India’s population) does get to play for the country, so it’s not a very special achievement. I look at it that way. I did well and then I was in the team. And now I have a task in hand to make India win.”

“I don’t want to be the guy who just comes into the squad, I want to make India win. Not just matches, but tournaments as well, and my focus is on that,” Iyer said.

Venkatesh Iyer played a big role in KKR’s astonishing turnaround in the second half of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021. He smashed 370 runs in just 10 games he played in UAE for KKR.

Meanwhile, Iyer further talked about the rumours that had suggested that he will get into the Indian team just after playing half a season in the Indian Premier League.

“After the IPL, there were rumours of me joining the Indian team or somehow getting into the Indian team. I’d be lying if I said I don’t use social media. I do check a lot of rumours that go around, a lot of memes, lot of pages mentioning my name, ‘as per reports’. And that lights a spark in me, it motivates me to do well. If someone is talking about me, why not give them something good to talk about,” Venkatesh Iyer said.
