Following a heated discussion on Sunday about a Pakistani bowler’s method of dismissal, former Indian bowler Venkatesh Prasad has called out former Australian batsman Mark Waugh. During the 2023 Women’s U-19 World Cup in South Africa, Pakistani pacer Zaib-un-Nisa has been one of the most recent players to run out the batter at the non-striker’s end.

During game No. 5 of the Women’s U-19 World Cup 2023 at the Senwes Park in Potchefstroom, the Pakistani pacer moved in to bowl but decided to remove the bails after noticing Rwanda’s Sharila Niyomuhoza leaving the crease early. In the 20th over, Zaib penalized the batter for pulling up too much, and the method of dismissal is already trending on Twitter.

Venkatesh Prasad’s Savage Reply To Mark Waugh

“The worst thing is it seems that teams are using it as a deliberate planned way to get a wicket,” Waugh said.

To which Venkatesh Prasad replied “Yes right , Bowlers planning to get a player out by legal means is the worst thing. Batsman wanting to take unfair advantage by not staying back in the crease is the best thing.”

The term “Mankading” refers to run-outs where the batsman tries to cross the crease before the bowler releases the ball. Vinoo Mankad executed the first such dismissal when he twice ran out Bill Brown at the non-striker’s end during the 1947–48 Test series against Australia.

Since the ICC updated its rule book in October of last year, these runouts at the bowler’s end are no longer treated “unfair play,” as they remain acceptable in the gentleman’s game. If such dismissals go against the “spirit of the game,” the argument goes on.

Last week, when Sri Lankan captain Dasun Shanaka left the crease and the Indian bowler removed the bails, India captain Rohit Sharma withdrew his appeal for Mohammed Shami to be run out at the non-striker’s end.

From 1994 to 2001, former Indian bowler Venkatesh Prasad played for India in 33 Tests and 161 One Day Internationals (ODI). Prior to the recently ended Sri Lanka series, veteran India bowler Prasad had criticized the decision to leave Ishan Kishan out of the starting XI.

Prasad had reacted angrily to the Indian management’s decision to dismiss Kishan, who had just scored an incredible double-century in Bangladesh.
