Indian Cricket Team batting superstar Virat Kohli is standing at the threshold of a major milestone, which will put him in an elite club of cricketers featuring Sachin Tendulkar, Kumar Sangakkara, and Ricky Ponting. Kohli is all set to become only the 4th batter in history to complete 27,000 runs in international cricket.

Indian batting legend Tendulkar is currently the leading all-time run scorer in international cricket with 34357 in 664 matches at a strike rate of over 67 and an average of over 48, with the highest score unbeaten at 248.

Tendulkar holds the world record for most international centuries (100) and has hammered 164 fifties in his celebrated career between 1989 and 2013. Sri Lankan legend Kumar Sangakkara is in the second spot with 28016 runs in 594 international matches, with the highest score of 319 runs.

The former Sri Lanka captain has 63 hundreds and 153 fifties to his name in international cricket, while his runs came at an average of over 46. The former Australian captain Ponting is standing at the third spot in the list of the most runs in international cricket, with 27483 runs in 560 matches at an average of around 46 and a strike rate of 68.

The Australian great smoked 71 centuries and 146 half-centuries in his international career. Well, now it’s the turn of modern-era legend Virat Kohli, who is comfortably sitting at the fourth spot with 26884 runs in 530 matches, with the highest score being 254*. The dashing right-hander has already smoked 80 hundreds and 140 fifties in his international career so far.

Kohli is already the fourth-highest run scorer in international cricket after Tendulkar, Sangakkara, and Ponting, and now he is on the cusp of achieving another incredible milestone during the upcoming three-match ODI series against Sri Lanka, starting on August 2 in Colombo.

Virat Kohli is just 116 runs away from adding a major milestone to his international career

Kohli needs only 116 runs to become the only batter in history to complete 27,000 runs in international cricket. If the former Indian skipper manages to score those runs in the upcoming ODI series in Sri Lanka, he will become the only fourth player after Tendulkar, Sangakkara, and Ponting to have scored 27,000 runs in international cricket.

Kohli is also 386 runs away from surpassing Sangakkara to become the second-highest run scorer in the history of ODI cricket. The India star is currently in the third spot with 13848 runs from 292 ODIs, while the Sri Lankan legend is the second leading run-scorer with 14234 runs, with the chart leading by none other than Master Blaster Tendulkar (18426).

The T20 World Cup 2024 winner has a great record in Sri Lanka, and he would like to extend his dominance in the island to at least come close to Sangakkara’s record during the upcoming ODI series, for which he already landed in Colombo on July 29.

Notably, Kohli has so far scored 4018 runs (1085 Test runs, 2594 ODI runs, and 339 T20I runs) in 72 international matches in Sri Lanka. He has so far played 11 Tests, 53 ODIs, and 8 T20Is on the Sri Lankan soil.
