International Cricket Council (ICC) on Friday (5th January) revealed the nominees for the Sir Garfield Sobers Trophy Cricketer of the Year 2023. The governing body picked as many as four players for the award out of which two are from Australia and two are from India.

The ICC picked players from Australia and India because of the impact both teams had in the year 2023. Both India and Australia were finalists of the two major ICC events in the 2023 in World Test Championship Final as well as the World Cup 2023.

From India, ICC has picked Virat Kohli and Ravindra Jadeja for the kind of impact they had in the year 2023. The batter was nominated because of his sensational outings in the Tests and the ODIs this year. He played a huge role for the team in both formats.

Virat Kohli was exceptional during the World Cup 2023 as he ended the tournament as the leading run-getter. The batter scored 765 runs in the 11 innings that he played and was key for his team reaching the final of the tournament.

During the World Cup 2023, Virat Kohli also surpassed Sachin Tendulkar to become the batter with most ODI centuries. The right-hander now has 50 tons to his name and was also the Player of the Tournament. Overall in 2023, the batter scored 2048 international runs and was the second-highest run-getter.

Ravindra Jadeja was nominated because of the kind of impact with the ball. He ended 2023 as the leading wicket-taker and was one of the main reasons behind India’s success in all three formats. The all-rounder picked 66 wickets and also had a decent outing with the bat, scoring 613 runs across formats.

From Australia, skipper Pat Cummins was one of the nominees. The fast bowler had a dream year in 2023 both as bowler as well as the captain of the team. Under his leadership, Australia defeated India in the final of the both World Test Championship and the World Cup 2023.

Pat Cummins enjoyed huge success as a pacer as well. The fast bowler picked 59 wickets in Tests and ODIs and was the biggest reason behind Australia’s success in two formats in 2023. It won’t be a surprise if he ends up winning the award.

Travis Head is the last nominee for the Cricketer of the Year. The southpaw played brutal knocks in the final of the World Test Championship and the World Cup 2023 against India. The batter scored fine centuries in both games and amassed 1700 runs across formats during the year.

The winners of the awards will be revealed later this January. It remains to be seen who will grab the award. If Virat Kohli wins the award, it will for the third time he will win the award in his career.
