According to the latest reports, it is being told that Virat Kohli was informed about the One Day Internationals (ODI) captaincy change just via an email.

BCCI’s senior selection committee has appointed opening batsman Rohit Sharma as the new ODI and T20I captain of India. Also, Rohit has been named as vice-captain of India in Tests.

Virat Kohli before the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 announced that he will be stepping down from T20I captaincy following the World Cup and it was expected that he might lose ODI captaincy as the BCCI was convinced that white-ball captaincy cannot be split and newly appointed Head Coach Rahul Dravid was on the same page.

Also, the BCCI has faced criticism for conveying the news of Rohit being appointed as the new captain of the ODI replacing Kohli with a single line message.

“Which is fine. Rohit’s time has come, and he must take fresh guard as leader of the pack. And Virat must accept it. But what’s a matter of serious concern here is how the BCCI, especially (its president) Sourav Ganguly, has chosen to address this issue,” sources to TOI said.

Exactly 16 years and three months to this day, then captain Sourav Ganguly was dropped from the side and Rahul Dravid took over the captaincy responsibility after Ganguly’s extremely poor form and an email from former coach Greg Chappell’s on how Ganguly “wasn’t fit to lead the team” and how his behaviour was “damaging the Indian team”.

During that time Ganguly was backed by the BCCI and president Ranbir Singh Mahendra, as he stated to the media in support of Ganguly and ten months later Ganguly made a comeback to the team.

Meanwhile, now Virat Kohli has been removed from ODI captaincy and he was informed about it via an email and without any prior discussions regarding this matter.

“And right now, Kohli needs the BCCI. To overcome that embarrassment, to overcome the anger and frustration he might be going through. Is Ganguly-the-BCCI-president going to stand by his cricketer the way the BCCI stood for him all those years ago?” say those watching this space closely to TOI .

Now, Virat will play under Rohit in white-ball cricket and he will be looking forward to focusing a lot more on his batting and Rohit will be looking forward to taking Indian cricket to the next level under his leadership. Also, the BCCI will have to play a big role so that everything works smoothly. It is also unknown whether Kohli spoke to Ganguly before the captaincy change.

“Other office-bearers of the BCCI, including secretary Jay Shah, may be acquiring administrative experience. But Ganguly – by virtue of having been the India captain and a 116-Test veteran – has serious cricketing experience. Will he put that to use and help Kohli find his feet again?” as quoted by TOI.
