Former Delhi Daredevils (now Delhi Capitals) captain Virender Sehwag feels that the two new IPL franchises are likely to target Australian opener David Warner for IPL 2022.

Things didn’t seem to go well between the Australian player and his franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final games of IPL 2021 as Warner was dropped from the team and was seen cheering for them from the stands.

SRH had a very poor season in IPL 2021 as the Orange Army finished at the foot of the points table, having won only three matches from 14 games. Warner was replaced with New Zealand’s Kane Williamson as the team’s captain in the middle of the tournament.

Two new teams can get a dependable opener and a great captain in David Warner: Virender Sehwag

Given Warner’s flamboyance with the bat as an opener of the game, Sehwag feels he could be the right man for one of the two teams (Ahmedabad and Lucknow) to build a strong leader.

“I believe the two new franchises that are entering the fray, they will have the option of picking three fresh options, and David Warner could well be in their radar. They can get a dependable opener and a great captain. They can get two more players like him and you can form a team around those three players. No doubt, Warner will be approached by one of the two teams as captain and player,” Sehwag said on Cricbuzz.

David Warner has hunger to score runs: Virender Sehwag

Warner joined Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2013 after being with Delhi Daredevils under the captaincy of Sehwag for the first five seasons in the Indian Premier League.

Warner has been the core of Australia’s batting order in all formats and was their vice-captain before the 2018 ball-tampering scandal in Cape Town.

Warner scored 289 runs in Australia’s triumphant campaign of the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2021.

Sehwag said that the Australian opener has a passion that helps him to score enough runs in all formats, including IPL.

“David Warner started off as a T20 player and after that he played ODIs and Tests. I think before playing for Australia, he featured in the IPL. From there, the journey he has embarked upon has been a phenomenal one. He is mentally very strong. David Warner has that hunger to score runs and he too sees competition within the Australia team. He has that passion that drives him to score consistently across formats,” Sehwag mentioned.

Warner was also adjudged as the player of the tournament for the ICC T20 World Cup 2021.
