Legendary Indian batter Virender Sehwag has predicted a long ODI future for Yashasvi Jaiswal. The former Indian opener admitted that Yashasvi Jaiswal has the talent to play all three formats, but right now he has to wait for Rohit Sharma’s retirement from ODI cricket.

Sehwag said that Yashasvi has already shown what he can do in ODIs in the limited chances when either Shubman Gill or Rohit Sharma was injured. He can also handle the pressure, but his time has not yet simply come. However, Yashasvi Jaiswal is likely to bat at No. 3 against Afghanistan.

Virender Sehwag predicts a big ODI future for Yashasvi Jaiswal after Rohit Sharma era

Virender Sehwag pointed out that India’s current opening combination is already settled with Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill, so there is no place for Yashasvi Jaiswal in the top order at the moment. But the former left-handed batter believes that Jaiswal will come into the picture once Rohit retires from international cricket.

He also singled out Ruturaj Gaikwad as a tough competitor for Jaiswal, but he feels Jaiswal has done enough to be preferred before the Chennai Super Kings captain after Rohit’s departure.

Virender Sehwag said on Cricbuzz: “But there is no space right now. Shubman Gill is the captain. Rohit Sharma is playing. As soon as Rohit Sharma retires, you will see Jaiswal playing white-ball and one-day cricket as well. Ruturaj Gaikwad might be a competitor of his, though. But if you take three openers, you will definitely see Jaiswal among them.”

The former Indian batter added, “See, he has come into the ODI team only because someone like Gill or Sharma wasn’t available. It was not like he got the chance and then he didn't perform. He performed very well when he got the chance. It was not like he was dropped after not performing. He was in the team because someone wasn’t playing.”

Virender Sehwag backs Yashasvi Jaiswal to play all three formats

Sehwag also noted that Ishan Kishan has already shown his ability in ODIs with a double century but is currently not part of the ODI setup. However, he strongly backed Jaiswal to play all three formats for India in the future.

He added, “Ishan Kishan is not part of one-day cricket either. He has made a double hundred in ODIs, the fastest. So, he is also a player who is in the reckoning. But I would definitely like to see Jaiswal in one-day cricket and T20Is, I mean, in all three formats. He is a player who can play all three formats.”

India set to test new No. 3 batter as Morne Morkel reveals team's big plan

Recently, India’s bowling coach Morne Morkel said that with Virat Kohli not playing the ODI series against Afghanistan, India has a chance to test different players at the No. 3 batting position. He explained that players like Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, or Yashasvi Jaiswal could be given opportunities in that role.

Morkel revealed that the Indian cricket team management wants to use these matches against Afghanistan at home to see who performs well in different batting positions so they can have more options and build the best possible team for the upcoming big series.
