Former Indian all-rounder Rohan Gavaskar backed Washington Sundar‘s inclusion in the squad for the T20 World Cup 2024. However, Rohan Gavaskar said that the final decision on Washington Sundar will hang on his form in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024.

Ravi Bishnoi, Axar Patel, Washington Sundar, and Kuldeep Yadav were selected as the spinners for the recent T20I series against Afghanistan. While Bishnoi and Sundar featured in all three matches, Kuldeep was included in the final match as Axar was rested by the team.

Axar (4) emerged as the leading wicket-taker from both teams in the three-match series. Sundar picked up three wickets at a decent economy rate of 7.56. Bishnoi took two wickets at an average of 56, and Kuldeep managed one wicket in his only appearance.

I Think Washington Sundar Should – Rohan Gavaskar

In a conversation with Cricbuzz, Rohan Gavaskar highlighted the fight for two or three positions during team selection. Gavaskar emphasized that the selectors will make the final decision for these spots considering the IPL form.

“I think he should. I think they’ll wait to see. It’s the fight in any team; the selection, the fight is always for two or three players. You’re always at 19-20 between two or three players. So, for these players, those 19-20, it will come down to form in the IPL,” Gavaskar told Cricbuzz.

Washington Sundar impressed with his bowling performance in the third T20I match. The off-spinner picked up three wickets and conceded just 18 runs in his three overs. He maintained a run rate of 6 on a surface where both teams scored more than 200 runs.

Sundar made his T20I debut for India against Sri Lanka in 2017. The 24-year-old all-rounder has taken 34 wickets in 43 games at an average of 28.47 and an economy rate of 7.20. Notably, he was not included in the squad for the last two editions of the T20 World Cup.

Most Likely It’s Going To Be Rohit Sharma

Rohan Gavaskar stated that Washington Sundar deserved the Player of the Match award for his outstanding performance. Gavaskar mentioned Sundar as a strong contender for the award, even with Rohit Sharma’s record-breaking century being acknowledged.

“If you’ve picked three wickets at an economy of a run a ball when 212 runs have been scored, I don’t know who the player of the match is, but for me, he’d be a really strong contender to be the player of the match. I know most likely it’s going to be Rohit Sharma,” the former Indian cricketer further stated.

Rohit Sharma achieved his fifth T20I century, rescuing the team from a difficult situation at 22-4. The 36-year-old scored 121 runs off 69 balls, featuring 11 boundaries and eight sixes. He added an unbeaten 190-run partnership with Rinku Singh for the fifth wicket.

The Rohit Sharma-led team whitewashed Afghanistan 3-0 in the home series. It’s worth mentioning that it was India’s last bilateral T20I series before the T20 World Cup 2024, which will be played in the West Indies and the United States of America later this year.
