Just at the brink of the India vs West Indies Test series, which begins tomorrow at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, all-rounder Washington Sundar had skipped the catching drills owing to a finger injury.
India will be featuring in the home Test series against the West Indies, which is scheduled to begin on the 2nd of October. The two-match Test series will be seen as a huge opportunity to rise in the WTC points table, as they are expected to dominate the Windies on home ground.
However, India also have some bad news: Rishabh Pant, the explosive middle-order batter, will miss this series owing to his delayed recovery following the fracture he sustained in the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy in July.
Is Washington Sundar injured ahead of the home Test series?
As team India prepare in the nets ahead of tomorrow's clash, all-rounder spinner Washington Sundar has been noted to be facing some trouble with his finger, which also restricted him from participating in the catching drills, as per a report in TOI.
Shubman Gill, the Indian Test skipper, was even seen in a conversation alongside the player on the drinks cart. At the same time, Ravindra Jadeja, Nitish Kumar Reddy, and Mohammed Siraj all gathered in a group to have a look at Sundar's hand.
Washington Sundar not only has a bowling role but also shows outrageous courage to bat stupendously under pressure. Sundar did have a long bowl, though, but he seemed to be in discomfort and asked the team doctor for some extra tape on his bowling hand.
Ever since the series against New Zealand at home, Sundar has been carved as one of the most crucial spinners on the Indian side, and after Ravichandran Ashwin's retirement, he is known to form a pair alongside the veteran all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The duo did some remarkable work for India with the bat in England.
Jasprit Bumrah and Kuldeep Yadav skip the optional session after the Asia Cup campaign
The Indian team management had announced that the players who participated in the Asia Cup could skip the optional Tuesday net session. As a result of this, the likes of Axar Patel, Kuldeep Yadav, and Jasprit Bumrah chose to take the day off.
All the players and support staff flew in from Dubai and checked into their hotels early at 3:30 am on Tuesday.
The team's strength and conditioning coach, Adrian Le Roux, put all the players through their paces. In between sprints and stretches, there came the odd encouragement.
Shubman Gill looked out of rhythm in Ahmedabad Nets
The Indian skipper Shubman Gill was India's most special batter in the last series in England. He rewrote record books with utter domination, as he scored 750+ runs in the series.
However, he missed the form in the Asia Cup, and now in the nets, he has been out of touch against the likes of bowlers like Mohammed Siraj. He was either beaten or edging deliveries. One such incident occurred when Mohammed Siraj nicked a ball off the batter's edge and went on to appeal loudly.
Fans would hope that in his first Test as captain in India, Gill would come good at a stadium he knows well, as he plays for the Gujarat Titans.
