Many fans were unaware of the timed-out rule in cricket as it never happened in the past. However, the year 2023 witnessed the first-ever timed-out dismissal. During the ODI World Cup 2023, Angelo Mathews was adjudged timed-out against Bangladesh.

The Sri Lanka all-rounder arrived to bat against Bangladesh. However, due to some issues with his helmet, he had to get it replaced. As a result, he took too much time to play his first delivery after arriving on the field.

Bangladesh skipper Shakib Al Hasan appealed for a timed-out and umpires had to call Mathews out without even facing a single delivery. According to ICC rules, a new batsman has two minutes to be prepared to face his first delivery after a wicket.
