It was rare that Joe Root was dismissed for a cheap score of 6 on Sunday; it was rarer that he was dismissed attempting a sweep, a shot which he has played prodigiously throughout his career and in particular in his last three Tests.
For India, it was Axar Patel, bowling in his debut Test match, who got rid of the English skipper as his first Test scalp, and what a big scalp it is considering the form Joe Root is in this year. Root has bagged three Man of the Match award this year in as many matches, scoring two double hundreds and a hundred.
India started off the day by losing two early wickets that of Axar Patel and Ishant Sharma and then lost two in quick succession that of Kuldeep Yadav and Mohammed Siraj.

However, in between those, Rishabh Pant took sent the England spinner for cleaners – the left-hander remained unbeaten on 58 from 77 balls; he smashed 7 fours and 3 maximums to take India to the total of 329.
In reply to India’s total, what now looks to be a match-winning one, England lost quick wickets. Ishant Sharma gave Rory Burns his second duck in a row while R Ashwin had Dom Sibley caught by Virat Kohli as both England openers were back in the hut at the score of 16.
Axar Patel picks Joe Root as his maiden Test wicket

Axar Patel, in only his second over, got rid of Joe Root. The off-spinner threw one in the air outside off, the ball as expected took massive turn and bounce, coming off a rough patch as the puff of dust exploded.
Joe Root, who has been on a freakish form in Asia, went for his much-revered sweep shot. But, this time, the ball bounced more than he anticipated as it took the top edge and R Ashwin took one of the easiest catches at short fine leg to the elation of the crowd. The visitors also lost Daniel Lawrence to Ashwin on the last ball before lunch.
