Axar Patel's brilliant knock in the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024 final between India and South Africa ended in an unfortunate manner. The India allrounder was run out for a well-made 47 runs as he was slow to get back inside the crease.

The left-handed batsman walked out to bat in the fifth over when India were in all sorts of trouble. After Rohit Sharma won the toss and opted to bat first, India lost three wickets in the powerplay. Keshav Maharaj put South Africa in the driver's seat by dismissing in-form Rohit and Rishabh Pant in the second over. He first dismissed Rohit for 9 before sending back Pant for a 2-ball duck.

Suryakumar Yadav could not deliver with the bat either and departed for just 3 runs to leave India three down for 34. Axar Patel and Virat Kohli then stopped the rot and bailed India out of trouble. Axar Patel mixed caution with aggression, hitting the occasional sixes to keep India on track for a big total while Virat Kohli played the role of second fiddle.

They took the score past the 100-run mark before the partnership ended when Quinton de Kock ran out Axar Patel in the 14th over. On the third ball of the over, Kagiso Rabada bowled one on the leg but Kohli could not make contact with the ball. The ball hit the thigh pad before going to the left of de Kock behind the stumps.

In the meantime, Axar Patel came out of the crease at the non-striker's end as he wanted a quick single. However, Kohli was not interested and Axar turned back. He had ample time to get back inside the crease safely but was a bit casual as he was not expecting de Kock to take a shy at the non-striker's end.

However, the South Africa wicketkeeper noticed that Axar was out of the crease and threw the ball at the non-striker's end. The ball went on to hit the stumps and caught Axar short.
