A cricketer in the Australian Southern Cricket Association (SCA) was left fuming after he was dismissed via a ‘Mankad‘ during a match. So much so that he threw his bat, gloves, and helmet while returning to the pavilion.

Run-out at the non-striker’s end before the ball is bowled, more contentiously known as the ‘Mankad’, is probably the most controversial form of dismissal in today’s cricket. The act, although completely legal under the laws of the game, is considered by some to un “unsportsmanlike” and against the spirit of cricket.

The act was attributed to Indian legend Vinoo Mankad, who used the run-out method against Australia on the 1947/48 tour, despite Vinoo not being the first cricketer to do this.

In a game between Claremont and New Norfolk in the Tasmania-based SCA First Grade final, Claremont was chasing a target of 264 in 50 overs. After reeling for 82/6, batters Jarrod Kaye and Rick Martin formed a solid partnership, which was broken when bowler Harry Booth, ran out Kaye at the non-striker end.

Jarrod Kaye’s reaction to be given out is now trending online. Before exchanging a few words with the umpire, he was seen chucking his bat, gloves, and helmet in the air while returning to his pavilion.

The controversy seems to have stemmed from the fact that the batting side believed that Booth was not in his bowling stride, which is necessary in order to do a ‘Mankad’.

MCC urges people and players to view ‘Mankad’ as any other form of dismissal

The World Cricket Committee (WCC) of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC), which are responsible for making and changing the laws of cricket, are taking steps in normalizing the ‘Mankad’ across all age group level. They urge the players and the people watching that they take ‘non-striker being run-out by the bowler’ as any other dismissal.

This form of dismissal has always been controversial, with the likes of Ravichandran Ashwin, Deepti Sharma, and Adam Zampa striking the flames of controversy by running batters out in this manner.

The committee, which consists of the likes of Sourav Ganguly, Kumar Sangakkara, and Alastair Cook, put out a statement in regards to this form of run-out, claiming that the bowler is not the villain here, and batters always have a choice of staying in the crease.

“The bowler is not the villain here. Every batter has a choice; to stay in their ground, or risk being given out if they try to steal ground. If they choose the latter, they are the ones who are breaking the law,” they said

With MCC trying to normalize this form of dismissal, it might find more widespread acceptance in the cricketing world.
