Sarfaraz Khan has hit the ground running in international cricket. After toiling hard in domestic cricket for years, he finally earned his maiden Test call-up for the ongoing series against England and made his debut in the recently concluded third Test in Rajkot.

He grabbed the opportunity with both hands by smashing half-centuries in both innings of the Test as India thrashed England by a record 434 runs to take the lead in the five-match series. The right-handed batsman could have made his debut even more memorable had it not been for that heartbreaking run-out in the first innings of the Test.

Sarfaraz Khan took the English attack to the cleaners and smashed a 48-ball fifty before his promising knock was cut short due to an unfortunate run-out. His senior partner Ravindra Jadeja called him for a quick single before changing his mind. And before the debutant could get back safely inside the crease, the damage was done. He had to depart after scoring 62 runs in just 66 balls.

And when he came out to bat for the second time in the Test, the run-out was very much in his mind as he fired a timely reminder to his batting partner Yashasvi Jaiswal. The India opener was batting on 199 when the stump mic caught Sarfaraz Khan telling his Mumbai teammate: “Tu bhaagna mat pehle (Don’t just take off for the run).”

Watch as Sarfaraz Khan warns Yashasvi Jaiswal:

Everything went well as Jaiswal scored his double-century. He and Sarfaraz Khan took the team’s score to 430/4 before India declared their innings and set England an improbable target of 557 runs. Jaiswal remained unbeaten on 214 while Sarfaraz remained unbeaten on 68.

The impressive display on debut saw Sarfaraz join an elite list of players such as Dilawar Hussain, Sunil Gavaskar, and Shreyas Iyer to have scored two half-centuries on Test debut. Meanwhile, India bowled out England for just 122 runs to inflict a record 434-run defeat on the tourists. The fourth Test is scheduled to be played from February 23 in Ranchi.
