Varun Chakravarthy, on Sunday (October 6), finally made his comeback to the Indian team for the ongoing first T20I against Bangladesh in Gwalior.
The Tamil Nadu spinner had played the last of his six T20Is way back in November 2021. For almost three years, he did not earn a recall from the national team before the selectors finally handed him a recall for the ongoing series.
Earlier this year, Varun Chakravarthy starred with the ball for Kolkata Knight Riders in the Indian Premier League. He finished the tournament as the second-highest wicket-taker, taking 21 wickets as KKR won the IPL after a gap of 10 years.
Even though the right-arm spinner enjoyed a stunning outing with the ball in IPL 2024, he could not make the cut for the T20 World Cup. He was also ignored for the bilateral series in Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka before earning the recall for the Bangladesh series.
Varun Chakravarthy outfoxes Jaker Ali:
The game did not start on a good note for Varun Chakravarthy. In his first over, he ended up conceding two fours and a six. However, the KKR star bounced back in style. In his second over, he dismissed the dangerous Towhid Hridoy for 12 runs.
Later in his third over, he picked up another wicket when he bamboozled Jaker Ali with a googly. Chakravarthy bowled a fullish-length delivery that spun in. Jaker Ali had no idea whatsoever about the line and length of the ball as he tried to play a forward defense.
However, the ball turned back in and passed through the big gap between the pad and bat to hit the stumps. Jaker Ali departed after scoring 8 runs off 6 balls.
Chakravarthy eventually finished his quota of four overs by taking 3 wickets for 31 runs. After dismissing Hridoy and Jaker, he sent back Rishad Hossain as well. Talking about the game, Bangladesh were on 111/7 after the end of the 16th over.
Mehidy Hasan Miraz (27) and Taskin Ahmed (9) were batting in the middle for the visitors. With Mehidy well set, Bangladesh will be hoping that he takes them close to the 150-run mark.
