All-rounder Deepti Sharma grabbed attention with a one-handed six during the first ODI between India Women and England Women at Southampton on Wednesday, July 16. After India’s victory in the series opener, Deepti also credited Team India Test vice-captain Rishabh Pant for her remarkable stroke.
Deepti Sharma and Sneh Rana guided India Women to a four-wicket victory over England in the opening ODI of the three-match series at Southampton. India have extended their winning streak in the format, registering their 11th win in the last 12 ODIs since the series against the West Indies in December.
I Got to Learn That Shot from Rishabh Pant - Deepti Sharma
Deepti Sharma pulled off a spectacular one-handed six that drew comparisons to Rishabh Pant. The Indian all-rounder lofted a length ball from outside off stump effortlessly over deep midwicket, leaving the crowd and commentators stunned.
The shot reminded many of Pant’s signature one-handed hits. Speaking after the match, Deepti revealed she had practised that shot and credited the India Test vice-captain, saying, “I have played these shots in practice. I got to learn that shot from Rishabh Pant.”

I Was Waiting for an Opportunity Like This - Deepti Sharma
India chased down the target of 259 with 10 balls to spare. Openers Pratika Rawal and Smriti Mandhana (28 off 24) added a 48-run stand. Rawal added another 46 runs with Harleen Deol before the collapse. India collapsed to 124/4 after losing Rawal (36), Deol (27), and Harmanpreet Kaur (17) in quick succession.
Jemimah Rodrigues then scored 48 off 54 deliveries in a crucial 87-run stand with Deepti Sharma. Deepti remained unbeaten on 62, and Amanjot Kaur added an unbeaten 20 runs off 14 balls.
"I was waiting for an opportunity like this. I wanted to build a partnership with Jemimah, scores 5-6 runs an over consistently. (On her sweep shots) I have worked a lot on it early days, and it helps on this kind of track," Deepti said.
Deepti Sharma Scripts Record with Unbeaten 62 in WODI Chase Against England
Deepti Sharma etched her name in the record books by registering the highest-ever score by an Indian woman batting at No. 6 or lower in a run chase.
Before Deepti, only a few Indian batters had reached a half-century in the lower middle order. Veda Krishnamurthy had scored 52* in a World Cup match against the West Indies in 2016, while Richa Ghosh managed 52 against New Zealand in 2022.
With this victory, India Women have taken a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series. It is worth mentioning that India also won the recently concluded five-match T20I series against England by 3-2.
