Virat Kohli finally laid his hands on the elusive IPL trophy on Tuesday (June 3) after Royal Challengers Bengaluru beat Punjab Kings in the IPL 2025 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
After 18 years of heartbreak and disappointment, Royal Challengers Bengaluru finally managed to win their maiden IPL trophy. The Bengaluru-based outfit beat Punjab Kings by 6 runs in a hard-fought final to become the champions for the very first time.
RCB defend the total in the IPL final
Asked to bat first, RCB finished their innings on 190/9 in the allotted 20 overs. Virat Kohli top-scored for his side but struggled throughout his knock. He was eventually out for 43 runs and played 35 balls for the same. During his 35-ball stay, Kohli managed to hit only 3 fours.
The likes of Phil Salt, Mayank Agarwal, Rajat Patidar, and Liam Livingstone showed promise, but none of them managed to convert their starts into big scores. Jitesh Sharma also started promisingly and raced away to 24 runs off just 9 balls before being dismissed.
He threatened to take RCB to a 200-plus total but was dismissed by Vijaykumar Vyshak in the 18th over. For Punjab Kings, Kyle Jamieson and Arshdeep Singh took the most number of wickets - 3.
In reply, Punjab Kings hardly looked in contention to chase down the total and eventually finished their innings on 184/7. Shashank Singh fought a lone battle for his side, scoring an unbeaten 61 off just 30 balls.
Virat Kohli celebrates triumph with wife Anushka Sharma:
After the match was over, Virat Kohli shared a special moment with his wife Anushka Sharma. Soon after RCB clinched their maiden title, Anushka ran towards the ground before she and Kohli shared an emotional and warm embrace.
Kohli also made sure to highlight Anushka's contribution in his career once again as he opened up on her support and sacrifices, saying: "So it’s been 11 years for her as well, you know. Relentlessly coming to games, watching tough games, watching us just miss out.
"What your life partner does for you to be able to play, and the sacrifices, and the commitment, and just backing you through thick and thin, is something you can’t explain in words. Only when you play professionally, you understand the amount of things that go on behind the scenes, and what they go through as well.
"What Anushka has gone through emotionally, watching me, being down and out, her coming to games, being so connected with Bangalore, she’s a Bangalore girl as well, and being connected to RCB, this is very, very special for her as well, and she’s going to be so, so proud," he added.
