After winning the Test series on their last two tours of Australia, India suffered a 1-3 defeat at the hands of the hosts in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. Australia were clinical in this series and ensured to finish the series on a high in Sydney.

After the loss, India's head coach Gautam Gambhir spoke about the moments where India lost this series. Gambhir also refused to blame any one department for the loss as he believes that India needs to be better in both of them to be a successful team.

During the press conference after the Sydney Test, Gautam Gambhir spoke about the moments when India had their chances to go ahead in the series. Gambhir also gave a stunning reply to a reporter when asked about mistakes made by India.

"Gautam, what are the mistakes that we made because of which we are seeing the 3-1 result? Because till you don't accept mistakes have been made, you can't improve," the reporter asked.

Replying to this Gautam Gambhir said, "Pehli baat toh ye, yahaan par jo insaan baitha hai woh galtiya sabse pehle kubool karega. Toh aap uske liye befikar rahiye ki yahaan pe galtiya kubool nahi ki jayengi."

("Firstly, the person sitting here will be the first one to accept that the mistakes have been made, so you don't have to worry that we won't acknowledge it.")

India head coach reckons that Australia could have been put under a lot more pressure if the Melbourne Test ended in a draw.

"We had our moments in this series where we could have won...the way we started this series, the pink ball Test match, and then we drew one match (in Gabba)," Gautam Gambhir stated.

"If you see that last session in Melbourne (Day 5), Australia would have been in much more pressure with the series locked at 1-1," he added.

The fourth Test in Melbourne was moving towards a draw. However, India suffered a shocking batting collapse in the last session of Day 5 to lose the match. The Men in Blue lost seven wickets in the final session as Australia took a 2-1 lead at that point.

Where did India lose the Sydney Test?

Gautam Gambhir further lamented the opportunity to win the Sydney Test. He feels that things would have been slightly different had the Indian batters put a good score on the board in the second innings.

"There were moments in this match as well. We had taken a lead even after getting all out for 180-odd in the first innings. Had we batted well in the second innings and given a target of around 250-275, then things could have been different," Gambhir observed.

"I won't blame any one department (batting or bowling). Overall, if we want to play well, we have to perform better in all the departments," the former India opener claimed.

India fight but Australia cruise to win

India were bundled out for just 185 in the first innings of the Sydney Test but the bowlers came back strongly to dismiss Australia for just 181. India needed their batters to step up at this moment like they did in the first Test at Perth.

But the batting line-up fumbled and the team couldn't handle the might of the Australian bowlers on a spicy pitch. Apart from Rishabh Pant, no other batter was able to make his mark when the team needed them.

Pant scored a counter-attacking 61 off just 33 balls and looked like the only Indian batter in command. Virat Kohli's poor form continued and it wrapped up a highly disappointing series for him. India scored just 157 in their second innings and Australia were left with 162 runs to win.

The target wasn't big and the hosts knew that they would be in control with just one good partnership. Jasorit Bumrah's unavailability didn't help India's cause as well. Australia chased down the target with six wickets in hand and regained the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
