The fourth day’s play in the ongoing second Ashes Test between England and Australia ended on a controversial note after a catch from Mitchell Starc was ruled out by the third umpire.

Chasing a record Lord’s run chase of 371 to draw level in the series, England started in a disastrous manner. The home side was reeling at 41 for 4 within an hour of their innings before Ben Duckett and Captain Ben Stokes steadied the ship and helped them finish the day on 114 for 4.

But two overs before stumps, England were on the verge of losing Duckett when he was caught by Starc before the third umpire gave his verdict in the batsman’s favor. On the fifth ball of the 29th over, Duckett miscued a short delivery from Cameron Green behind the stumps. The ball flew to fine leg where Starc claimed a catch running low to his left.

The left-arm pacer did take the catch cleanly in the air but ended up placing the hand on the grass as he steadied himself while sliding. Duckett started walking off the field but was asked to wait before third umpire Marais Erasmus deemed it an unfair catch.

Glenn McGrath livid after Mitchell Starc’s catch deemed unfair:

Former Australia pace spearheads Glenn McGrath, who was on-air during the incident, lost his cool at the third umpire’s verdict as he vented his frustration. The legendary pacer was absolutely furious with the verdict and called it a “disgrace”.

“That is the biggest load of rubbish I’ve ever seen. He has got it under control. I’ve seen everything this game has to offer, if that is not out, then every other catch that has been taken should be not out. That is a disgrace,” McGrath said.

McGrath’s former teammate and captain Ricky Ponting was not impressed with the call either. The legendary cricket pointed out the inconsistencies in the third umpire’s decisions over such catches. He recalled the catch from Steve Smith to dismiss Joe Root in the first innings to prove his point, saying:

“Mitchell Starc had much better control of that ball and for longer than when Steve Smith did when he caught Joe Root.”
