Team India, on Saturday (June 29), finally ended their long wait for the World Cup trophy as they beat South Africa to clinch the recently-concluded ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The Rohit Sharma-led side beat the Proteas by 7 runs to power India to their second T20 World Cup title and first since 2007.

India had their back against the wall at one stage as Heinrich Klaasen was taking their bowlers to the cleaners. However, the Indian bowlers staged a remarkable comeback and sealed a historic triumph for the team.

South After were cruising at one stage while chasing 177 runs. At the end of the 16th over, they were on 151 for 4, needing just 24 runs from 25 balls with a well-set Klaasen and David Miller in the middle. However, the Proteas failed to cross the finishing line as India's bowlers staged a remarkable comeback. In the end, South Africa finished their innings on 169 for 8.

Earlier in the game, India recovered from 34 for 3 to post 176 for 7 in the allotted 20 overs. India lost three wickets inside the powerplay before Virat Kohli roared back to form just when the team needed his services the most. The former India skipper played a brilliant knock of 76 runs while Axar Patel also played a crucial 47-run knock to take the team to a competitive total.

The India stars including the likes of captain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Virat Kohli, and others just could not contain their emotions after the game. The players were just overwhelmed with emotions as India finally ended their long wait for a World Cup victory. The players were in tears as they embraced each other in moving scenes after the final.

India have now become the first Asian country to win the T20 World Cup twice. Overall, they are the third team after England and West Indies to win the competition twice. The triumph has also ended India's long wait for an ICC trophy. India had not won any ICC competition since winning the Champions Trophy. Last year, they had lost the final of the WTC and ODI World Cup at home.
