Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting and West Indies pacer Kemar Roach were engaged in a brilliant banter during the ongoing second Test between Australia and West Indies at the Gabba, Brisbane.
Both of them decided to have some fun at the end of the second day’s play. While Kemar Roach is spearheading the attack for West Indies, Ricky Ponting is plying his trade as a commentator. Soon after the day’s play ended on Saturday (January 27), Ricky Ponting jokingly stated that the pacer owes him 1.5 million dollars.
Ricky Ponting was referring to the incident that took place way back in 2009 when Ricky Ponting was still active as a player and faced Kemar Roach. The West Indies pacer had given the legendary batsman a tough time by attacking him with a barrage of bouncers.
The brilliant spell against the tough opponent helped Kemar Roach catch a lot of attention and he went on to earn a lucrative IPL contract. Chennai Super Kings and now-defunct Deccan Chargers went all out for him before the latter managed to sign him for more than Rs 3 crores. Kemar Roach was the second costliest buy in the IPL 2010 auction.
“I have actually said forever, Kemar, he still owes me about 1.5 million dollars because on the back of that (spell), he was picked up in the IPL auction straight after,” said Ricky Ponting.
Kemar Roach responds to Ricky Ponting:
After Ricky Ponting reminded Kemar Roach of his famous spell in 2009, the West Indies star hilariously told the former Australia skipper that he could have handled him better, saying: “You could’ve dealt with it better.”
In reply, Ponting said: “I remember telling the boys, he (Roach) actually bowled a faster spell in Adelaide (during that tour) than Perth.”
We had a chat with Kemar Roach, so naturally we had to ask if he and Ricky Ponting still get along okay 😂 #AUSvWI pic.twitter.com/sNQ9E0IQeM

Ponting had to retire hurt in Perth after being hit by one of the bouncers from Roach. Talking about the ongoing game, West Indies were on 193 for 9 on day 3. They are currently leading Australia by 215 runs. Earlier in the game, West Indies were bowled out for 311 runs before Australia declared their innings on 289 for 9. The hosts have already taken an unassailable lead in the two-match series by winning the series opener by 10 wickets.
