Akash Deep endured a heartbreaking moment on his India debut as a front-foot no-ball prevented him from claiming his maiden wicket in international cricket. The Bengal fast-bowler made his debut in the ongoing fourth Test between India and England in Ranchi.

While Mukesh Kumar was expected to replace Jasprit Bumrah in the playing eleven, especially after his match haul of ten wickets in the Ranji Trophy last week, the team management decided to allow Akash Deep to make his debut in international cricket.

The 27-year-old earned his maiden India call-up after impressing for India A. In the two unofficial Tests against England, he picked up 11 wickets including two four-wicket hauls. In first-class cricket, he has picked up 104 wickets in 30 games at an average of less than 24.

Heartbreak for Akash Deep:

After England opted to bat first, Mohammed Siraj and Akash Deep opened the bowling for Team India. In his first over, the Bihar-born pacer conceded just two runs before castling Zak Crawley with a beauty in his second over.

On the fifth ball of the fourth over, he bowled a length delivery around the off-stump that nipped back in sharply and beat Crawley’s inside edge. The ball went on to hit the stumps and sent the off-stump cart-wheeling. Akash Deep was delighted with the dismissal and was celebrating it animatedly but his joy was short-lived as the siren went off immediately, signaling a front-foot no-ball.

Watch:

Talking about the game, England were on 37 for no loss at the end of the seventh over. After collecting 18 runs in the first six overs, Crawley took Siraj to the cleaners in the seventh over, hitting him for three fours and a six in a row. Crawley was batting on only 4 when Akash Deep bowled him and India will be hoping that the reprieve does not prove costly for them.

India are currently leading the five-match series 2-1. The hosts lost the first Test in Hyderabad by 28 runs before winning the second and third Test by 106 and 434 runs respectively.
