Adelaide Strikers captain Matthew Short did something spectacular during the Big Bash League knockout match against Perth Scorchers. On the 5th ball of the 13th over of the second innings, Short bowled a length ball pitching in line of the stumps, to which Scorchers batsman Nick Hobson went on the back foot and tried to play it towards the leg side. However, he ended up chipping it straight back towards the bowler. Matthew Short jumped towards the ball and took a stunning diving catch to his left.
It was a flop batting show by the Perth Scorchers against Adelaide Strikers while chasing down 156 runs in Perth. Scorchers were wrapped up for 105 runs and handed over Strikers a win by 50 runs. Scorchers are now knocked out of the tournament whereas Strikers will face Brisbane Heat on January 22 in Queensland.

Batting first the Adelaide Strikers didn’t start off well as openers D’Arcy Short and Matthew Short had to walk back after scoring 6 and 13 runs respectively. After losing 2 wickets for Jake Weatherald, tried to balance the Strikers’ innings and stood at one end strongly. However, Adelaide kept on losing wickets from the other end, when Thomas Kelly, Harry Nielsen, and James Bazley were dismissed cheaply.
Jake Weatherald completed a well-deserved half-century and scored 56 runs from 32 balls. Ben Manenti, David Payne, and Henry Thornton played some useful cameos and helped the Adelaide Strikers reach a score of 155/7 in 20 overs. Perth Scorchers captain Aaron Hardie and Cooper Conolly picked up 2 wickets each whereas Jason Behrendorff and Andrew Tye ended the innings with 1 wicket each.
Chasing down the target, Perth Scorchers openers Sam Fanning and Marcus Harris added 38 runs for the first wicket. While Fanning was dismissed for 31 runs from 20 balls, Harris walked back to the dressing room for 8 runs. Skipper Aaron Hardie and Sam Whiteman were also not able to do much and departed for 6 and 2 runs respectively.
After facing a batting collapse, Josh Inglis and Cooper Conolly tried to bring the Perth Scorchers innings back on track but soon they were also dismissed for 12 and 31 runs respectively. The lower order as well was not able to add much to the team’s total and the rest of the wickets fell like a deck of cards.
Lloyd Pope was the pick of the bowlers for the Adelaide Strikers and ended the innings with a four-wicket haul. Cameron Boyce picked up 3 wickets whereas, captain Matthew Short, David Payne, and Henry Thornton picked up 1 wicket each.
The Adelaide Strikers will now aim to beat Brisbane Heat in the second BBL qualifier and make a place in the final of the tournament all set to take place on January 24.
Adelaide Strikers have won the Big Bash League title once which was back in 2018. On the other hand, Perth Scorchers were the five-time winners of the championship and were hunting for their 3rd consecutive trophy. However, their dream remains a dream they will now have to come back next season and aim to win the competition.
