There was panic on the field during the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 match between Afghanistan National Cricket Team and South Africa National Cricket Team when the star wicketkeeper-batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz got hit on the thigh.

Marco Jansen's delivery turns nightmare for Rahmanullah Gurbaz

Gurbaz came to open the innings with Ibrahim Zadran and the team management would have been hoping that the duo would take Afghanistan to a flying start.

However, on the third ball of the first over itself, there was a massive injury scare on the field when Gurbaz collapsed on the ground. The incident happened when Gurbaz inside-edged a Marco Jansen delivery onto the back thigh.

He quickly ran for a single and after completing it with ease he was down on the ground at the non-striker's end. Rahmanullah Gurbaz looked in extreme pain, and he called for medical attention.

There was a lengthy delay in the match as Rahmanullah Gurbaz was put through some stretches by the physio. He did not look comfortable and seemed to have been pointing to his stomach. After some time, he got up and was ready to go.

However, Gurbaz's innings didn't last very long as he was dismissed by Lungi Ngidi on the second ball of the 4th over as Keshav Maharaj completed a good catch to send him back.

What happened in the previous ODI between South Africa and Afghanistan?

South Africa bagged a dominant 7-wicket win over Afghanistan in their previous ODI match in Sharjah on September 22, 2024. Despite losing the series 2-1, South Africa displayed a good performance with both bat and ball in the final match to finish on a high note.

Batting first, Afghanistan struggled to put up a big total. They only managed to score 169 runs before getting all out in just 34 overs. Wicketkeeper-batsman Rahmanullah Gurbaz was the top performer in the innings, scoring 89 off 94 balls with seven fours and four sixes.

However, he received no support from the rest of the batting lineup. Apart from No.9 player AM Ghazanfar's quickfire 31 off 15 balls, no other Afghan batsman crossed the 10-run mark.

Meanwhile, South Africa were brilliant with the ball and on the field, with three Afghanistan batters being run out. Lungi Ngidi (2/22), Andile Phehlukwayo (2/17), and Nqabayomzi Peter (2/22) shined for the Proteas and dismantled Afghanistan's batting lineup.

Chasing the target of 170 runs, South Africa finished off the match comfortably in 33 overs. Aiden Markram batted incredibly, scoring an unbeaten 69 off 67 balls.

He was well supported by Tristan Stubbs (26*), Temba Bavuma (22), Tony de Zorzi (26), and Reeza Hendricks (18). For the Afghans, Fareed Ahmad (1/17), Mohammad Nabi (1/37), and Ghazanfar (1/38) were among the wickets.
