Ravichandran Ashwin was once again involved in a heated altercation with the umpire as he expressed his displeasure in one of his decisions during the first innings of the ongoing third Test between India and England in Rajkot. Team India were slapped with a five-run penalty by on-field umpire Joel Wilson due to Ravichandran Ashwin’s action.

The spin spearhead was penalized for running along the middle of the pitch while batting on day two of the Test at the Niranjan Shah Stadium. As a result of the umpire’s decision, England will be starting their innings on 5/0.

The rule states that: “It is unfair to cause deliberate or avoidable damage to the pitch. If the striker enters the protected area in playing or playing at the ball, he/she must move from it immediately thereafter. A batter will be deemed to be causing avoidable damage if either umpire considers that his/her presence on the pitch is without reasonable cause.”

While Ravichandran Ashwin was found guilty of running along the middle of the pitch for the first time, it was not the team’s first offense. On day one of the Test, Ravindra Jadeja was also warned for the same reason. The rule states that any team can receive only a first and final warning and if any player repeats the offense, the opposition will be awarded a five-run penalty.

Ravichandran Ashwin argues with the umpire:

Soon after Wilson imposed a five-run penalty on Team India, Ravichandran Ashwin decided to express his displeasure over the call. The off-spinner, who rarely shies away from speaking his mind, approached Wilson and was seen animatedly arguing with him.

Watch:

Talking about the game, India were 380/7 at the time of writing this report. Ravichandran Ashwin and debutant Dhruv Jurel were batting in the middle for the home side. They have already added 50 runs for the eighth wicket. Earlier, India began the day on 326 for 5 and lost overnight batters Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav in quick succession.
