Indian skipper Rohit Sharma finally won his first ICC title for India as they defeated South Africa in the T20 World Cup final by seven runs in Barbados on Saturday.

In the process, Team India won their second T20 World Cup title and the first ICC title in 11 years. The Men in Blue won their second T20 World Cup title in 17 years since winning their first in 2007.

All the Indian players were emotional at the end of the final. A few players including Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya and Virat Kohli had tears in their eyes. Hardik defended 16 off the final over as India became T20 World Cup for the second time.

India also became the first time to win an ICC T20 World Cup title unbeaten. They did not lose any games and beat the top teams in the matches. India defeated Ireland, Pakistan, USA, Bangladesh, Australia, England in the semi-final and then South Africa in the final in an intense phase of play in the final five overs.

South Africa needed 30 off 30 balls in the chase at one point and they fell short by seven runs as India choked them under pressure. Meanwhile, Rohit Sharma at the post-match press conference for once was at his humorous best.

"I believe that its all written in the stars. And this was written. Obviously, it was not before the match. Thats the game. And like you said good things happen to good people, you have said that I am a good person." Rohit said.

Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli both announced their retirement from the T20I format after India won the T20 World Cup. On a day when Rohit Sharma did not get too many runs (9), Virat Kohli scored 76 off 59 balls and anchored the Indian innings. Axar Patel scored a crucial 47 off 31 balls and Shivam Dube 27 off 16 balls to help India reach 176.

South Africa in the chase lost wickets at regular intervals. Quinton de Kock tried holding one end up scoring 39 off 31 balls. South Africa was brought back into the game with Heinrich Klaasesn's 53 off 27 balls once he was dismissed him in the 17th over with Jasprit Bumrah dismissing Marco Jansen in the 18th over to bring India back into the game. Pandya's double blow to dismiss David Miller and Kagiso Rabada in the 20th over then sealed the game for India.

“This is my last game as well, no better time to say goodbye to this format,” Rohit said after the T20 World Cup final, which marked his 50th win as Indian T20 captain. “I’ve loved every moment of this. I started my career for India playing this format and this is what I wanted, I wanted to win the World Cup" said Rohit on his T20I retirement almost on the same lines as Virat Kohli.

Interestingly, Rohit is only one of the two players to have played every T20 World Cup till the recent one in 2024.
