Shubman Gill failed to get going with the bat in the ongoing third ODI between Sri Lanka and India at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

With Sri Lanka posting the highest score of the ongoing three-match series, India needed a good start from their openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill. Rohit Sharma, who scored fifties in the first two games, continued his red-hot form as he came out all guns blazing while Shubman Gill was once again playing the role of the second fiddle.

At the end of the fourth over, India had raced away to 35 runs with Rohit smashing 31 of those runs from just 13 balls. On the other hand, Shubman Gill had scored 4 runs off 11 balls during that period. The young opener finally decided to break the shackles in the fifth over but his decision backfired as he was clean bowled by Asitha Fernando.

On the third ball of the over, Shubman Gill danced down the track and swung his bat hard. However, he could not make any contact with the ball as it kept low and went on to hit the leg stump. The right-handed batsman departed after scoring 6 runs off 14 balls.

It also ended Gill's campaign in the ongoing tour of Sri Lanka. He could not score a single fifty against Sri Lanka. In the two T20Is that he played, Gill scored 34 and 39. It was followed by knocks of 16 and 35 in the first two ODIs.

Meanwhile, India were on 58/2 in the 9th over at the time of writing this report. Dunith Wellalage gave Sri Lanka a huge wicket by dismissing Rohit for 35 runs in the 8th over. Earlier in the game, Sri Lanka finished their innings on 248/7, the highest total in the ongoing series.

At one stage, Sri Lanka were on 171/1 and were looking set to post in excess of 250. However, India took some quick wickets to reduce the hosts to 199/6. Sri Lanka then did well to finish with 248 runs. Opener Avishka Fernando starred with the bat for the home side, scoring 96 runs while Kusal Mendis scored 59. For India, debutant Riyan Parag impressed with the ball, taking 3 for 54.
