Pakistan have an impossible task at hand if they are to make it to the semi-finals of the ICC World Cup. They are currently placed fifth on the points table having won four matches and lost four. Their NRR is +0.036 which is way lower when compared to New Zealand’s +0.743

Pakistan have more than one equation to overcome if they are to surpass New Zealand’s net run rate. Not only do they need to win. They need to win big and have to bring numbers into account.

The Men in Green must beat England by 275 runs to topple the Kiwis. In addition, if they chase, the target should be sealed within 2.3 overs. If England scores 300-plus batting first, the Men in Green need to reach the score inside six overs. Speaking ahead of the match, Babar Azam fired shots at Pakistan cricket experts.

“TV pe baith ke mashwara dena asaan hota hai . Agar mashwara dena hai toh number toh sabke paas hi hai (If someone has to give me advice, everyone has my number. It is easy to give advice on TV. If you want to give me some advice, you can message me),” Babar said.

Pakistan won their only World Cup in the 1992 edition while they reached the semi-finals the last time way back in 2011. The Men in Green won by 21 against the Kiwis on the DLS method. However, the Kiwis made up for it by winning big against Sri Lanka and almost confirming their spot in the semi-finals.

Pakistan’s realistic chance is only if they score over 400 batting first and restrict England to 112, then its NRR will go above New Zealand. The SA vs AFG game will hardly have a bearing on the ENG vs PAK game as Pakistan needs to surpass almost impossible scenarios to win the match.

“When we came to the dressing room, just passed message we need good partnerships. Said to Fakhar if he plays 15 overs we’ll be ahead. Back of the mind we knew rain was coming. Full credit to Fakhar. We knew there was a short boundary and utilised it. We’re just trying to give 100 percent. You never know. We’re just going match by match” Babar said after their win against New Zealand in the last match.
