Papua New Guinea player John Kariko was mankad by Uganda bowler Joseph Baguma in the ICC Under 19 World Cup 2022 match between Uganda U19 and Papua New Guinea U19 on Friday, January 28.
Many believe that running out the non-striker is against the spirit of the game. However, several people also believe that it’s completely legal and there is nothing wrong with it.

Meanwhile, the incident took place in the 16th over of the second innings, when Papua New Guinea players were batting. Non-striker John Kariko had backed up too far at his end and Joseph Baguma decided to run him out.
South Africa wrist spinner Tabraiz Shamsi reacting to this wicket, stated:
“Nothing wrong with this if the batsman was out of his crease before the ball was bowled ….bowlers get penalised even if they overstep by a millimeter by mistake and a free hit is given so batsmen should stay behind the crease too.”

Meanwhile, Uganda U19 won the match by 35 runs against Papua New Guinea U19. Uganda U19 won the toss and opted to bat first. Batting first they were off to a poor start as they lost three batters – Ronald Opio, Ronald Lutaaya, Fahad Mutagana – at the score of just 20 under 6 overs. All the Uganda U19 batters were seen struggling in this match other than Cyrus Kakuru, who smashed brilliant 65 runs off 59 balls, including 11 boundaries and he helped the team post 123 runs on the board.
Chasing the target the Papua New Guinea U19 batters performed terribly and they kept losing wickets at regular intervals. Only three players from the side crossed the 10-run mark and only one player scored above 20 runs. Junior Morea top-scored for the side with 26 runs off 17 balls, including 4 fours and one six. Papua New Guinea U19 were bowled out for 88 and Uganda bowlers Juma Miyaji, Joseph Baguma, and Matthew Musinguzi shared all 10 wickets between them. However, John Kariko, who got mankad, won the Player of the Match award for his 5-wicket haul in the first innings.
