The Australian pace attack, featuring Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, and Scott Boland, is making the life of Indian batters hell in the ongoing New Year’s Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in Sydney on Friday, January 3.

After Rishabh Pant endured a series of dangerous blows on Day 1 of the fifth and final Test, it was now the turn of Washington Sundar to face the wrath of the Australian pacers at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) in Sydney. Following Rishabh Pant, India's spin all-rounder Washington Sundar was also hit in his private area.

Washington Sundar left writhing in pain after a brutal Pat Cummins delivery in the New Year's Test at the SCG

The incident unfolded on the third ball of the 66th over of India’s first innings in the ongoing New Year’s Test, as Washington Sundar was left writhing in pain after a brutal delivery from Pat Cummins at the SCG on Day 1. As Cummins bowled a nip-backer, Sundar tried to block it with his high hands, but the ball beat him on the inside edge, sending it straight into his box.

The impact was immediate and extremely painful, resulting in Washington Sundar collapsing to the ground in agony, unable to recover from the painful blow. Team India’s physio rushed onto the field to assess the damage as the Indian all-rounder struggled to get back on his feet following the nasty blow.

It is certainly a moment no player ever wants to experience, and Sundar's discomfort was evident as he lay on the ground. This painful incident left fans and players worried for the Indian cricketer. However, after a couple of deliveries, Sundar was controversially sent back to the pavilion.

Watch Washington Sundar's painful moment here:

Pat Cummins delivered a short ball to Washington Sundar, and he attempted to pull it. At first, Sundar seemed unsure if he had missed the ball, but Australian wicketkeeper Alex Carey immediately appealed, convinced that the Indian all-rounder had touched it with his glove.

After the consultation, the Australians have taken the review, and replays showed a small spike on the technology when the ball was close to the glove. The TV umpire took a moment to review and instructed the on-field umpire to change his decision.

Sundar was dismissed for 14 off 30 balls, with 3 boundaries to his name, with India struggling at 148/8 against Australia in the Sydney Test.

Jasprit Bumrah takes perfect revenge for Sundar's controversial wicket

Notably, after Sundar’s controversial wicket, Indian skipper Jasprit Bumrah took the perfect revenge after asking the umpire, "There is no consistency; last game it wasn't given out," referring to the Indian all-rounder’s wicket in the ongoing New Year’s Test.

However, despite losing eight wickets, India found a glimmer of hope, as Jasprit Bumrah sparked some momentum. Bumrah smashed three consecutive boundaries against Scott Boland, giving India a glimmer of hope as they continued to fight for a comeback at the SCG.

The pitch at the SCG has so far been a big help for the fast bowlers, and the grass cover has kept the bowlers in the game, so Indian bowlers will now be hoping for the same conditions in the second innings.
