India set to bat again after enforcing follow-on for the first time in 13 years
Meanwhile, India had declared their first innings at 518/5 and then restricted the West Indies to 248, taking a 270-run lead, and they felt it was enough to enforce the follow-on. The touring side made a strong comeback to avoid an innings defeat in the second Test in Delhi.
For the first time in 13 years, India will bat in the second innings after enforcing the follow-on. The last time this happened was way back in November 2012 against England, when India had to come out to bat again in the fourth innings after making the opposition follow-on.
Since that 2012 test, India has enforced the follow-on several times, but this is the first time in over a decade where they themselves have had to bat again after enforcing it.
Here's a list of follow-ons that the Indian Test team have enforced since 2012:
21 July 2016 – Sir Vivian Richards Stadium: India defeated West Indies by an innings and 92 runs.
3 August 2017 – Sinhalese Sports Club Ground: India beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 53 runs.
12 August 2017 – Pallekele International Cricket Stadium: India dominated Sri Lanka, winning by an innings and 171 runs.
14 June 2018 – M Chinnaswamy Stadium: India crushed Afghanistan by an innings and 262 runs.
4 October 2018 – Saurashtra Cricket Association Stadium: India overpowered West Indies, winning by an innings and 272 runs.
10 October 2019 – Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium: India defeated South Africa by an innings and 137 runs.
19 October 2019 – JSCA International Stadium Complex: India beat South Africa again, this time by an innings and 202 runs.
4 March 2022 – Punjab Cricket Association IS Bindra Stadium: India dominated Sri Lanka, winning by an innings and 222 runs.
