Debutant Yashasvi Jaiswal impressed everyone with a spectacular one-handed catch during the first ODI between India and England. Indian team members, including Axar Patel, Harshit Rana, and fielding coach T. Dilip, shared their reactions to the remarkable catch by Yashasvi Jaiswal in a video shared by the BCCI.
Jaiswal made his ODI debut against England in Nagpur on Thursday. He didn’t have much impact with the bat, scoring 15 off 22 balls. However, he made an impression with his fielding. Jaiswal took an incredible catch to dismiss Ben Duckett off Harshit Rana’s bowling in the 10th over of England's innings.
Duckett played a pull shot but mistimed it due to the extra bounce. The top edge flew over the leg-side infield, bringing Jaiswal into action. Jaiswal sprinted backward, covering a significant distance, and executed a dive to complete the catch, reminiscent of Travis Head's catch in the 2023 ODI World Cup final.
Yashasvi Jaiswal Caught the Catch Very Well - Arshdeep Singh
After the match, the Indian team shared their reactions to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s stunning catch. Arshdeep Singh jokingly said that if he had run ahead and a bit faster, he could have caught it with one hand too.
"I think if he had run ahead and run a little faster like me, then he could have easily caught it with one hand. But... credit goes to him. He caught the catch very well. And he put in a lot of effort on the field," Arshdeep Singh jokingly said.
I Thought He Wouldn’t Be Able to Take It - Axar Patel
Axar Patel said that he was standing near Yashasvi Jaiswal and initially doubted he would be able to make the catch. Patel mentioned that Jaiswal stretched his body, made an angle, and dived to complete the catch. As the cricketers reacted, Jaiswal stood silently, smiling with pride, and Axar teased him.
“I was standing near Jaiswal, so I saw the whole catch. When he was running, I thought he wouldn’t be able to take it, but when he stretched his body, made an angle, and dived, it was really nice to see. It was a fantastic catch,” Patel said.
“Why are you shy standing there? It’s a catch you have taken; there’s nothing wrong. Well done, nice catch,” Patel added.
I Knew His Hands Were Reliable with Catches - India's Fielding Coach
India's fielding coach, T. Dilip, said that the ball drifted away and he hoped Yashasvi Jaiswal would make the catch. Dilip added that if Jaiswal could get to the ball, he would catch it. Harshit Rana also stated that Jaiswal had taken similar catches in the past.
“I was sitting and watching the ball, and then I realized the ball was drifting away, but Jaiswal kept running. In my mind, I thought, just catch it, Jaiswal, we need this wicket. I knew his hands were reliable with catches, so if he could run, he could catch it,” T. Dilip said.
“I knew he would catch it. In the past years, he has taken similar catches,” Harshit Rana said.
