Former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri slammed England bowling coach Tim Southee for targeting Indian skipper Shubman Gill over Day 3 drama at Lord’s in the ongoing third Test of the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

The drama unfolded on Day 3 of the third Test when England opener Zak Crawley pulled away from the crease twice just as Jasprit Bumrah was about to bowl. It was very clear that they were just trying to delay the game and avoid facing another over on Day 3 of the ongoing Lord’s Test.

This made the Indian cricket team very angry, especially Shubman Gill, who walked up to Crawley and had a heated exchange with him. The situation got worse when Crawley got hurt on his fingers and called for the physio, causing more frustration in the Indian camp.

After the match, Tim Southee accused Gill of double standards. He said India shouldn’t be complaining because Gill himself had taken a long break for a massage on Day 2.

Southee said at the end of the day's play, “It's always exciting to see both sides animated towards the end. I'm not sure what they were complaining about when Shubman Gill was lying down getting a massage in the middle of the day yesterday. It's obviously part of the game when you're near the end of the day. It's an exciting way to finish the day.”

Ravi Shastri hits back at Tim Southee over Shubman Gill controversy

But Ravi Shastri, who is known for his blunt and fearless views, hit back at the England bowling coach while defending Gill. He called Southee’s remarks unnecessary and said that Gill’s anger was understandable. The former Indian head coach has stressed that getting treatment for an injury is not the same as wasting time on purpose.

The commentator noted that moments like the Lord’s drama add spice to the game and are perfectly fine if they stay within limits. Shastri said that the heated exchange is part of the drama of Test cricket, saying it is good to have some fight on the field between the players.

A little bit of argy-bargy is okay: Ravi Shastri

Ravi Shastri said on Sky Sports, “If I were wearing the Indian hat, I would have done all that. We call that tamasha. All that is allowed, and you want all that. You can’t just have ‘Good morning…good evening’ and go home. A little bit of argy-bargy is okay as long as you don’t cross the line.”

Well, India matched England’s first-innings score of 387, riding on a brilliant century from KL Rahul and a solid half-century from Ravindra Jadeja. Rahul’s classy knock laid the foundation, while Jadeja’s third consecutive fifty in the ongoing five-match Test series helped them match the total at Lord's.
