Ishan Kishan’s parents – father Pranav Pandey and mother Suchitra Singh – are extremely proud and happy for their son who got his maiden ODI cap on Sunday in Colombo, while being selected to play against Sri Lanka. That it is his 23rd birthday as well makes the occasion special.

Along with Ishan Kishan, his Mumbai Indians teammate Suryakumar Yadav also made his ODI debut. Both the players have earlier made their T20I debut in the home series against March; both played Man of the Match half-century knocks in their maiden outings.

Pranav Pandey, a Patna-based businessman, said that he and his wife had no idea that Ishan Kishan was going to be given his ODI cap. They had talked to him and wished him for his birthday at midnight, but there was little talk of cricket. He hopes the 23-year-old left-hander performs well.

“Hope it becomes an icing on the cake. Yes, we wished him at midnight but had no clue about his participation in the match. We hardly discuss cricket with him. Even during this tour, we chat on other general things but never bring pressure on him by discussing cricket,” Ishan Kishan’s father told Deccan Chronicle.

Ishan Kishan is the second Indian player to make an ODI debut on his birthday. Former middle-order batsman Gursharan Singh made his ODI debut on his birthday, March 8, against Australia at Hamilton in 1990. He could manage only one Test and one ODI under his belt.

Gursharan talks about his debut and the jitters that came with it.

“It is an icing on the cake if the player performs on his birthday. Nervousness is bound to be there and it was no exception when I made my debut on my birthday,” Gursharan Singh said.

“I wanted to make it very special and win for the team but could only score 4 runs in the match, which we lost. It is a great day if you perform and get disappointed if you don’t,” he added.
