Former Indian opening batsman Gautam Gambhir has said that India have been searching for a pace-bowling all-rounder since Kapil Dev and it’s time India should move on from their search for a fast-bowling all-rounder.

Indian management has always struggled to find a good fast-bowling all-rounder and after the fitness issues faced by Hardik Pandya, the problem of team management has increased.

Kolkata Knight Riders all-rounder Venkatesh Iyer was included in India’s squad after Hardik Pandya made himself unavailable to gain bowling fitness following the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Iyer did a decent job for the team in the home T20I series against New Zealand and he was included in India’s squad for the ODI series against South. He played two games in the three-match ODI series against South Africa and he bowled only in one game. Iyer has also been dropped from India’s ODI squad for the upcoming series against West Indies.

Gautam Gambhir feels that the international cricket stage is only for delivering performance and India should only groom players at the domestic and India A stage.

“If you don’t have something, don’t go for it. You have to accept and move on. Don’t try and create something which you can’t create, that is where the problem lies,” Gambhir told Sports Today.

“I have always believed that international cricket is all about delivering and not grooming someone. Grooming happens in the domestic and Indian A levels. When you represent your country, you should be ready to go out there and perform straightaway,” said Gambhir.

Gautam Gambhir further added that India should develop players at the Ranji Trophy before giving them an international call-up and a longer rope needs to be given to a player once he gets ready for the international stage.

We keep talking about not having an all-rounder since Kapil Dev to be honest. So move on and try to develop people at the Ranji Trophy and once they get ready, get them in international cricket and stick with them. Don’t keep changing them quickly. We have seen that with so many guys like Vijay Shankar, Shivam Dube and now Venkatesh Iyer. We need to move on,” said Gambhir.
