Cricket West Indies announced a 13-member squad for the first test against Pakistan and they have made some interesting choices with the likes of Rakheem Cornwall being left out. West Indies haven’t had the consistently good performances in the test arena that we are used to seeing in the olden days.
They have a bunch of young players combined with some experienced players like Jason Holder and Kemar Roach, and they have created some upsets against the big teams at times. This is going to be a competitive series for sure, with the Pakistan Test team in a good fray.
West Indies Selection Panel Opts For Variety In The Squad
The West Indies selection panel mentioned that the squad has been chosen basis on both the spin and fast bowling options. The lead selector Roger Harper justified that they wanted to strengthen their batting which has reaped them good rewards in Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. As for variety, they have gone in with Jomel Warrican, and also they got the all-around abilities of Roston Chase with Cornwall placed in the reserves.
“The Selection Panel chose a squad that provides both pace and spin bowling options. With Roston Chase included, variety was considered in the selection of Jomel Warrican”
“It is good to have Nkrumah Bonner back. The team does very well when our batsmen score centuries as we saw against Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. So, I look forward to our batsmen scoring big,” Roger Harper, lead selector of the West Indies senior men’s team
Nkrumah Bonner Makes The 13 Member Squad
Nkrumah Bonner who was in the headlines for sharing the historic partnership alongside Kyle Mayers against Bangladesh has also been included in the 13 member squad for the first test.
West Indies squad: Kraigg Brathwaite (Captain), Jermaine Blackwood (Vice-Captain), Nkrumah Bonner, Roston Chase, Joshua Da Silva, Jason Holder, Shai Hope, Alzarri Joseph, Kyle Mayers, Kieran Powell, Kemar Roach, Jayden Seales, Jomel Warrican
Traveling Reserves: Shamarh Brooks, Rahkeem Cornwall, Jahmar Hamilton, Chemar Holder
Pakistan tasted success in the previous tour of the West Indies in 2016, and they will be looking to continue their good performances.
