The Women's T20 World Cup 2024 has come under a serious scanner after the situation got worse in Bangladesh. The tournament is all set to take place in Asian county from 3rd October to 20th October across the two venues in Dhaka and Sylhet.
The current situation in Bangladesh is not good. Riots are going on in the country, and it has also seen a lot of people getting killed as well. Prime Minister of the country, Sheikh Hasina, also resigned and has flown away from the country, depicting the conditions in the country.
Amid all the violence, there has been a lot of speculation about the future of the Women's T20 World Cup 2024. The tournament is still two months away but with the kind of turmoil that is being there, it can even extend till October and can put the tournament in jeopardy.
The T20 World Cup 2024 will played over 18 days, and 10 teams are scheduled to play 23 fixtures at two venues in Bangladesh - the Shere Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Dhaka and the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium in Sylhet, where the situation is currently not good with people getting killed.
Amid all the fuss, an ICC spokesperson has talked about the possibility of shifting the tournament. He said that they are closely monitoring the situation with the Bangladesh Cricket Board. He stated that their priority is the safety and well-being of all the teams. Speaking to TOI, he explained:
"The ICC is closely monitoring developments in coordination with the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), their security agencies and our independent security consultants. Our priority is the safety and well-being of all participants."
Recently, some reports claimed that during the ICC’s annual conference in Colombo, few of the cricketing boards raised the matter, but the governing body didn't discuss the matter formally as it wasn't on their agenda.
The ticketing process is on hold due to the turmoil in Bangladesh
As per the reports in Sportstar, it is learned that the turmoil in Bangladesh hasn't allowed the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) and the International Cricket Council (ICC) to start the ticketing process and even the media accreditation. This usually starts two months before the tournament but is yet to begin.
In May, the International Cricket Council unveiled the schedule of the T20 World Cup 2024 in Dhaka. India Women National Cricket Team skipper Harmanpreet Kaur and Bangladesh Women National Cricket Team skipper Nigar Sultana were present at that event. They also had a chat with Prime Minister Hasina at her residence.
Australia are the defending champions and would be hoping to continue their dominance in the tournament, having won the title six times. England and the West Indies won the title twice while India is yet to win. The Harampreet Kaur-led side would be eager to make a mark in the tournament and script the history. They recently reached the final of the Asia Cup 2024 before losing the final against Sri Lanka.
