Batting great Sunil Gavaskar talked about the future of India captain Rohit Sharma in the Tests. He questioned Rohit if he had given another chance to a player who performed like him in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25.
Since the last few months, Rohit Sharma's Test career has witnessed a massive decline. This is because the India National Cricket Team skipper had failed to set the stage on fire and has struggled to reach even double figures, which says a lot about his poor form.
Rohit Sharma failed to get going in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25
Rohit failed to get going in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 as well. The India National Cricket Team skipper looked torrid with the bat ever since he joined the team in the second match of the series at Adelaide. He batted in the middle order for two games but failed and then moved up.
After that, in the fourth Test, he opened the innings, but the same fate followed. This ultimately led India National Cricket Team skipper Rohit to take a call for the team as he went on to drop himself for the final match of the series. In the Tests against Australia, he scored just 31 runs at a paltry average of 6.20.
Would he have given another chance to a player who performed like this? - Sunil Gavaskar on Rohit Sharma
Sunil Gavaskar talked about the situation surrounding Rohit Sharma, saying that if the selectors want to give another chance to the captain because of what he has done, that will be a different thing. But he questioned if some other player would've got the same treatment. Speaking to Star Sports, he said:
"If he had been a selector, you don't have a vote as a captain but are a co-opted member of the selection committee, would he have given another chance to a player who performed like this? If you say, yes, you would have given another chance to such a player, then it's different,"
If some other player had so many failures, three Test matches against New Zealand and three Test matches here, and you would have said you wanted to pick him, it's different, or else the thing is clear in front of the selection committee."
The second thing is about the age - Sunil Gavaskar is not confident about Rohit Sharma playing till 2027
Sunil Gavaskar further pointed out the age factor, saying that players in Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli don't have that going their way as well. He believes that if the seniors aren't fit by the next final of WTC, then they shouldn't play in England. He added:
"The second thing is about the age. It's different if someone is 25 or 26 years of age. Whatever I have said previously, it's not about Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli or (Ravichandran) Ashwin; I am saying that the next World Test Championship cycle is starting in June. It will be a series in England."
Then when the final will be after two years in June 2027, will all these players be available for that? By available I mean whether they will be fit to play, whether they will be fit performance-wise. If not, I would say start afresh from the England series."
