Wriddhiman Saha is considering leaving the Bengal team after being picked in the Ranji Trophy squad for the knockout stages. The CAB’s accusations against Saha, a Bengal veteran behind the stumps, appear to have affected him.
Saha’s wife, Romi Mitra, stated that Saha was hurt by comments made by a CAB official (Debabrata Das) during the Ranji Trophy group phase, who doubted his devotion openly in the media.
According to PTI, the 37-year-old was dissatisfied with the way the Cricket Association of Bengal treated him and had applied for a No Objection Certificate to quit his domestic team.
According to sources familiar to Saha, the 37-year-old was not contacted before being named in the squad after withdrawing from the Ranji league stage due to ‘personal issues.’
An enraged Saha approached Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) president Avishek Dalmiya after learning of the development, demanding permission to leave Bengal, according to a source familiar with the situation.
“He no longer wishes to play for Bengal and has requested a NOC. One CAB office-bearer (joint secretary Debabrata Das) has allegedly questioned his dedication, which irritates him much. He is seeking a public apology “PTI quoted the source as saying.
Wriddhiman Saha has opted out of the Ranji Trophy league stage, due to personal reasons:
Saha’s wife Romi Mitra told news outlet Sportstar that Saha was wounded by comments from a CAB official (Debabrata Das) who questioned his devotion openly in the media during the Ranji Trophy group stages.
This was also about the time that Saha shocked the Indian cricketing environment by making his WhatsApp conversations with a senior journalist public. He further revealed that the Indian head coach had approached him personally and asked him to leave international cricket.
“When Wriddhi opted to forgo the Ranji Trophy league stage owing to personal reasons a few months ago, a particular CAB official issued a statement to the media questioning his devotion.
“Wriddhi felt saddened by such words as a veteran player who has done so much to Bengal cricket,” Saha’s wife Romi Mitra told Sportstar.
“He spoke with Mr. Dalmiya today after the squad was named last night and discussed the entire subject.
“The CAB president encouraged him to reconsider and participate in the knockouts, but Wriddhi informed him that he is unable to play for Bengal again after so many doubts were raised about his dedication,” Romi continued.
Wriddhiman Saha has had a good season in the Indian Premier League, scoring a lot of runs in the power play. This season, he has 281 runs with a strike rate of 123 from eight matches.
