Yashasvi Jaiswal destroys decades-old record of Sunil Gavaskar, joins Virender Sehwag in historic list

India's batting superstar Yashasvi Jaiswal has made a sensational start to his international career. In just more than a year since his Test debut, Jaiswal has surpassed Sunil Gavaskar to achieve an incredible feat.

During the second Test between India and Bangladesh at Kanpur, Jaiswal scored twin fifties to take India to a brilliant win. The opener smashed 72 off 51 balls in the first innings with 12 fours and 2 sixes.

The left-hander did not stop here and carried his good form in the second innings as well. With India needing just 95 runs to win the match, he scored a quickfire 51 off 45 balls with 8 fours and 1 six.

Yashasvi Jaiswal surpasses Sunil Gavaskar during Kanpur Test

During the second innings when Yashasvi Jaiswal scored a brisk fifty, he surpassed the legendary Sunil Gavaskar and broke his record. Gavaskar scored 918 runs in the year 1971. It is the highest by any Indian cricketer in a calendar year before turning 23.

Jaiswal is currently 22 years and 278 days old, and has already scored 929 runs in the year 2024. With India slated to several Test matches in the upcoming months, Jaiswal has a chance to build on his record and make it a difficult one to break for the next player.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is in sensational batting form in 2024. He was outstanding in the home Test series against England earlier this year as he racked up 712 runs in 5 Tests at an average of 89 with 2 hundreds and 3 fifties. He scored these runs at an incredible strike rate of 79.91 and was the highest run-scorer of the series.

Yashasvi Jaiswal matches Virender Sehwag

During the Kanpur Test, Yashasvi Jaiswal also became the second Indian batter to hit two fifties in the same Test with a strike rate of 100 or over 100. Virender Sehwag was the first Indian batter to achieve this feat.

Sehwag achieved this feat against West Indies in Delhi when he scored 55 off 46 balls in the first innings and a run-a-ball 55 in the second innings. Sehwag was known to play in an attacking mode even in Test cricket. He had a career strike rate of 82.23 in Tests.

Yashasvi Jaiswal in Test series vs Bangladesh

The 22-year-old followed up his good Test form in the series against Bangladesh as well. He scored 189 runs in 2 Tests at an average of 47.25. He was the highest run-getter of this series as well.

Jaiswal was also adjudged Player of the Match for his performance in Kanpur Test. India have played two Test series at home this year and Jaiswal has scored the highest no. of runs in both the series.

His form is a good sign for India ahead of the Tests against New Zealand and Australia. India will play a three-match Test series at home next and will travel to Australia for a five-match Test series afterwards.
