Young opening batter Yashasvi Jaiswal has cemented his place in Team India’s Test team with his performances. Many believe it’s only a matter of time before he becomes a regular across all formats, forming an opening pair with new skipper Shubman Gill in ODIs in place of veteran batter Rohit Sharma.

Jaiswal scored 175 runs off 258 balls, including 22 boundaries, in the first innings of the second and final Test against the West Indies at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. However, he has had limited opportunities in the shorter formats, having played 26 Tests, just one ODI, and 23 T20Is for India so far.

The left-handed batter has been included in India’s ODI squad for the upcoming white-ball tour of Australia, but was not selected for the T20I series.

Rohit Sharma Steps Down; Shubman Gill Takes Over as India’s ODI Captain

Rohit Sharma recently stepped down as India’s ODI captain, sparking speculation about his future in international cricket. He has already retired from Tests and T20Is and will now focus solely on the 50-over format.

Young opener Yashasvi Jaiswal has also been included in India’s squad for the upcoming ODI series against Australia. The three-match series will begin in Perth on October 19, with the remaining fixtures scheduled in Adelaide on October 23 and Sydney on October 25.

Rohit has an impressive record in Australia, scoring 2,407 runs in 46 ODIs at an average above 57, including eight centuries. Earlier this year, he played a key role in India’s victory at the 2025 ICC Champions Trophy.

Yashasvi Jaiswal Becoming the Favorite Of Gautam Gambhir

Times of India journalist Pratyush Raj was asked who would communicate the decision regarding the possibility of Rohit Sharma being rested for an ODI. He stated that the final decision on Yashasvi Jaiswal would likely be revealed at the toss.

Raj mentioned that Yashasvi Jaiswal is expected to open alongside Shubman Gill. He also highlighted Jaiswal’s growing rapport with Gautam Gambhir, describing him as a favorite of the former India opener, who gives him special attention compared to other players.

"I think we'll get to know at the toss," Pratyush Raj said.

"I've been told that Yashasvi Jaiswal is slowly becoming a favourite of Gambhir. He treats him in a way no other player does. When Rishabh Pant is around, it's different, but Jaiswal is like a darling to Gambhir. So, I wouldn't be surprised."

Rohit Sharma's Record as ODI Captain

Rohit Sharma became the full-time captain of India’s ODI team in December 2021. He had previously led the side as a stand-in skipper in tournaments like the 2018 Asia Cup and established himself as one of India’s most successful white-ball leaders.

Under his captaincy, India achieved notable successes, including the 2023 Asia Cup triumph in Sri Lanka. The team remained unbeaten en route to the ODI World Cup final, where they narrowly lost to Australia.

Rohit then guided India to victory in the 2025 Champions Trophy, reinforcing his reputation as a strategic and effective leader. He captained India in 56 ODIs from 2017 to 2025, recording 42 wins, 12 losses, one tie, and one no-result.
