In a scintillating display of resilience and skill, Indian cricket team opener Yashasvi Jaiswal etched his name into the record books on Day 1 of the ongoing opening Test of the two-match series against Bangladesh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on September 19.

Amidst a flurry of wickets falling around him, the young Indian opener stood tall, crafting a gritty half-century that not only anchored India's innings but also helped him to create history in the traditional format of the game on Thursday.

Yashasvi Jaiswal breaks the 89-year-old record in the Chennai Test against Bangladesh

As India grappled with the stunning Bangladesh bowling attack, Jaiswal's steady hand and unwavering focus shone brightly in Chennai. He smashed a brilliant fifty under intense pressure to give some hope to Team India at that point, as well as helped him to make a couple of world records.

Yashasvi Jaiswal 's breakthrough innings made him the first batter in the 147-year history of Test cricket to score over 750 runs in his first 10 innings at home. With this ground-breaking feat, the left-handed opener broke the 89-year-old record of West Indies legend George Headley, who had amassed 747 runs back in 1935.

Here are the batters with the most runs after the first Test 10 innings at home:

755* - Yashasvi Jaiswal (India)

747: George Headley (West Indies)

743: Javed Miandad (Pakistan)

687: Dave Houghton (Zimbabwe)

680: Sir Viv Richards (West Indies)

Yashasvi Jaiswal sets new record for India in Tests

Meanwhile, Yashasvi Jaiswal recorded his sixth consecutive fifty-plus score in home Tests since making his debut for India in the format in 2023 in the West Indies. With this achievement, the 22-year-old batter set a new record for India in Test cricket to have the most number of back-to-back fifty-plus scores at home.

Yashasvi Jaiswal surpassed Rusi Modi’s five consecutive fifty-plus scores in home Tests since his debut to become the first Indian player to hit the most number of consecutive fifty-plus score in home Tests since his debut in the format.

The significance of this achievement is less than that of Jaiswal’s performance, which came during a time when India's batting line-up was under the pump, and his ability to score runs under pressure speaks volumes about his caliber and composure.

Ravichandran Ashwin achieves special feat in the Chennai Test

However, Yashasvi Jaiswal fell to Bangladesh's new pace sensation Nahid Rana for 56. He also added 62 runs with Rishabh Pant (39) to get some momentum into the Indian innings after Indian captain Rohit Sharma, Shubman Gill, and Virat Kohli were dismissed cheaply against Bangladesh in Chennai.

Later, Ravindra Jadeja's (86) and Ravichandran Ashwin's (102) 100+ stand brought the Indian team back into the game against Bangladesh. With this ton, Ashwin also achieved a significant feat in Test cricket, surpassing Pakistan’s Kamran Akam in the elite list.

Ashwin becomes the only second player to have hammered the most number of centuries—four—while batting at number eight or below in Test cricket. New Zealand’s Daniel Vettori is leading the chart with five tons to his name in the longest format of the game.
