"You Need To Change Your Strategy Because He Is Naturally Not An Opener": Mohammad Azharuddin On Babar Azam

Former India skipper Mohammad Azharuddin offered instruction to Pakistan’s standout batsman in a huge remark. He also passed judgment on Babar’s captaincy.

Pakistan faced a two-wicket loss in the third and final ODI of the series against New Zealand on Friday, thus conceding a series defeat. The visitors won 2-1 with the win in the decider at the National Stadium in Karachi, as pressure continues to grow on Babar Azam’s captaincy.

Pakistan had failed to register a single win in their home Test season, losing series to Australia and England while enduring a stalemate against the Kiwis.

“Babar Azam was dismissed lbw a lot of times”: Mohammad Azharuddin

When asked how Babar should approach T20 cricket, where he frequently struggles with his strike rate, Azharuddin responded that Babar should approach all forms of cricket. The legendary Indian batsman recalled the T20 World Cup and advised Pakistan to bat at position four rather than changing his approach as a batter.

“Pakistan has two important openers – Rizwan and Babar. In the last big tournament, Babar dismissed lbw a lot of times. These are the things you need to think of. If you are not getting runs at the top of the order then you should bat at No.3 or 4 and it would benefit Pakistan as well. You need to change your strategy because he is naturally not an opener,” Mohammad Azharuddin said.

Azharuddin believes that it would be unfair to evaluate a player’s captaincy after only a little period.

“Every person takes time to learn. How long has it been? 1-2 years? Give him some time. It is not easy to judge captaincy in such a short time,” he said.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is reportedly planning to relieve Babar of his captaincy in one of the three formats, with Shan Masood emerging as a strong candidate to take his position.
