The year 2017 saw some scintillating individual batting master class as the batsmen ruled the game of cricket. Batsmen have always had the edge over the bowlers in some way or the other and this year saw the same pattern. Cricket has always been a batsman’s game, and the recent changes in the rules have shifted the pendulum in their favour even more. The rise of the shortest format of the game, the T20 format gives batsmen the license to go all guns blazing from the very first delivery they face.
This mindset of a batsman has also affected the ODI format as they go after the bowlers from the word go and batsmen have achieved some astonishing feats this year. Let’s have a look at the five individual high scores.
The Windies scored a mammoth score of 356/5 against England at the Oval in the fourth match of the five-match ODI series. Evin Lewis, the new West Indian batting sensation scored a brilliant 176. He eventually retired hurt because of an injury. The Windies lost the match by six runs via Duckworth-Lewis method.
Australia’s hard-hitting left-handed batsman David Warner looked like he was going to score his first ever double century but fell 21 runs short against Pakistan. Warner scored 179 in the fifth ODI against Pakistan as Australia scored a huge score of 369/7 in Adelaide. The hosts won the match by 57 runs.
Martin Guptill showed the world that sometimes a single individual can win the match for his side. In the fourth ODI against South Africa, the Kiwi’s were set a target of 280. Martin Guptill in a one-man show scored an incredible 180 and helped his team level the series.
Faf Du Plessis has played some incredible innings for his side over the years. His best score came against Sri Lanka early this year when the Islanders toured the Rainbow nation. In the fourth ODI, Du Plessis scored an incredible knock of 185 to make it 4-0 for the hosts. South Africa eventually won the series 5-0.
At the top of the list is India’s marathon man in the limited overs format, Rohit Sharma who scored his third double century in the 50 over format. Rohit scored 208* against Sri Lanka in Mohali to completely dismantle the Lankan bowling line up. Rohit also holds the record of scoring the highest score of 264 in ODI’s.
