Gilchrist shares a cordial relation with India and often visits the country for commentary stints. He also took part in the Indian Premier League for Kings XI Punjab. However, Adam Gilchrist fondly remembers the historic 2001 Test against India at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
Australia had come to India on the back of 15th consecutive Test wins under Steve Waugh. They stretched their lead to 16 banking on a superb counter-attacking hundred from Gilchrist. However, a magical spell from Harbhajan Singh ended their winning streak in Kolkata. Adam Gilchrist and the whole Australian team were brought to reality as they lost the next two matches in one of the historic series.

“We were five for 99, I went in there, got a hundred off 80 balls, we won in three days and I just thought, ‘What have these blokes been doing for 30 years. How easy’s this? And how wrong I was. We’ve only got to fast forward to the next Test match and I came back to reality,” said Gilchrist on cricket.com.au’s The Unplayable Podcast.
“As it would turn out, by the end of that series we probably needed to learn how to put a handbrake on just to get a holding pattern, rather than ‘attack, attack, attack’ because it doesn’t always work – Harbhajan bamboozled us. He was a bit of a nemesis for me right throughout my career,” he added.

Adding further, Adam Gilchrist stated that Harbhajan Singh and Sri Lanka’s legendary spinner Muttiah Muralitharan are the two toughest bowlers he has faced in his career. Harbhajan picked up 32 wickets in three matches, including the first-ever Test hat-trick for India in Kolkata.
“I found him (Harbhajan) and Murali (Muttiah Muralitharan) probably the two hardest bowlers to face,” Gilchrist concluded.
