Over the past year, South Australian gloveman Alex Carey was one of the best finds for the Aussie limited-overs side. His selection in the World Cup squad raised some eyebrows; however, he justified his inclusion by mustering 375 runs at an average of 62.50. And since then, the men in yellow have found a worthy replacement for Brad Haddin in their ODI team. As Australia and India kickstart the three-match ODI series from the 14th of January, Carey said that he wants to play the role of MS Dhoni for his side.

The veteran wicketkeeper-batsman is one of the best finishers in modern-day cricket. Not only is Dhoni capable of playing some whirlwind knocks, but also can take the innings deep to script a win while chasing. While the 28-year old has grown in leaps and bounds since his debut, he wants to keep imbibing Dhoni’s skills in him.

Carey further said that he would bat somewhere between middle and lower order and in that position, he wants to finish games for his side with a flourish. The South Australian looks up to the former Indian captain in this regard and hopes to keep learning as much as he can from him, especially the way he took many games to the wire on several occasions.

“I still have lots of areas in my game I want to improve on and get better at. I know I will probably bat middle to lower order so it’s trying to finish games off for Australia. When you look at the best in the world like MS Dhoni, you want to learn as much as you can from him. I was lucky enough to play against him (Dhoni) last year, just the way he took the game deep and won the games for India. I aspire to do that one-day.” the Aussie keeper said as quoted by Times Now.

The southpaw, who was part of the squad, that stunned India to claim the five-match ODI series last time, realizes the uphill task ahead of them. However, having all their key players in Steven Smith, David Warner, Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins, Marnus Labuschagne back in the side; they are a force to be reckoned with. The South Australian was confident that said that since they have performed well here in the past, they have no doubt they can repeat it.

“It’s going to be some great, tough cricket coming up. We’ve got some world-class players in Warner, Smith, Marnus is coming off lots of runs, and Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc, so I don’t think we need to doubt our abilities. We’ve shown in the past we’re good enough over here.” he concluded.

Australia and India resume their rivalry in the three-match ODI series that begins on the 14th of January at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.
